Anyone else seeing Woodcock?

Post by ch312 »

Just wondering if anyone else in Ontario has seen any woodcock cruising around this spring. In the past 10 years I have seen maybe a total of five, but on Saturday I saw four within a few hour period while on an ATV ride. I actually had to slow down to almost a stop or I would have smoked two that were right on the trail.

We were on the Six Nations reserve and I was pleasantly surprised to see them. Is the population making a comeback or was I just extremely lucky to see four within such a short time frame?

I'll post a video of them if I captured them on the GoPro. I'm not sure if I did or not as I haven't reviewed any of the videos yet.

I have heard them at work I'm on afternoons and in the evening I can hear them doing the timberdoodle thing (air dance).

Yup, did some dog training on them when they first arrived. They start showing up as soon as the snow starts melting in patches. Basically, when you start seeing robins, you know the woodcock are here too. Woodcock are nesting now, so we leave them be until October. Then its back to this...

Love those birds!

Well, I didn't get any footage of them on the GoPro. I did get a ton of video ripping through deep mud and water though

I'm going to try hunting them this fall.

My brother and his friend usually train their dogs in early April as the birds get back. In three days this past April they managed to lift 22, 12, and 14 in the Niagara region. I like to wait till the fall to see them and hopefully the 20 will sing and put some in the freezer! :D
