what to do with last year's deer

Post by wabi »

School started this week and my son is usually starved when he comes in the door.
Wife's working today, so it's up to me to fix something the boy will eat.

Dug around in the freezer and came up with a couple small packages of backstraps from last year's deer, so I figured it's good enough for him.
Browned them up, then mixed up some brown gravy and dumped it in the skillet for them to simmer in until he gets home.

Got biscuits ready to pop in the oven, and "dirty rice" with some fresh corn added for our side dish.

Doubt if I'll have to deal with any leftovers tonight.

BTW - Made the mistake of giving our puppy a taste when they were browned to be sure it was fit to eat. Now he's waiting at my chair for the meal to go on the table.

Looks great ... Now you got me thinking about what I could come up with if I went freezer diving.

We had our meal and even saved a little for the wife when she gets home.
My son cleaned his plate this time.

I washed mine down with fresh home-made tomato juice (spiced up with a few smoked hot peppers when we made it) and had some fresh home-made salsa (made with Carolina Reaper peppers) & corn chips on the side. I'm still sweating and about ready for a nap.

Nothing more satisfying than food from the garden and game you harvested yourself in my way of thinking.
