The week of December 1st to the 5th is shotgun only where I have my tree stand set up and where I have been bow hunting since October 1st. I had to put the Micro 335 away and take out the Mossberg 12 gauge pump with rifled barrel. I was hunting with a friend and his tree stand is about 200 yards from mine. Monday & Tuesday were a bust for me as I was attending a funeral out of town and couldn’t make it back until Tuesday night. My buddy sat in his stand both days that I was away with no action. Wednesday morning we were both in our stands and still nothing. I hadn’t had time to check my cameras in a few days so we checked the cameras when we were coming out for lunch. Sure enough, there is a nice 10 pointer on both cameras. The only problem was he wasn’t coming around during shooting hours. We had seen a couple smaller bucks on the cameras also so we were hopeful one of them would come around this week. Wednesday afternoon about 4 pm a doe and fawn wandered past my tree stand about 50/60 yards out but we only had buck tags. This morning we get to our stands about 6:55am. About 8:45am I hear a loud snort off to my right about one hundred & fifty yards. I can’t see anything because of the fir trees. Then about 3 minutes later another load snort. I didn’t know it at the time but it seems that a doe and fawn had wandered in between me and my hunting partner and must have smelled us. My hunting partner could see them from his stand but I couldn’t see them from mine. He told me afterwards that when he heard the snorts he stood up in his stand and looked behind him and there was a doe and fawn. Eventually they ran off into the bush. I wasn’t quite sure what to do so I gave a couple grunts on my “Wabi” deer call. It wasn’t five minutes later and I see a deer coming straight for me about 150 yards away. It was the 10 pointer we had seen on the trail camera the day before. He must have heard the doe snorting and the grunts I gave out and thought someone was trespassing on his territory. He came straight at me and I’m still not sure why he didn’t hear my heart pounding. It seemed to take forever for him to come in but at about 60 yards after he was in the open I fired and he pretty much dropped on the spot. We had to drag him more than a kilometer to the truck but well worth the work. A very successful ending to a long and enjoyful deer season.
