Crossbow Noise

Post by BobbyR »

I have owned my Grizzly for over 6 months now, and have shot it an enormous amount of times, and it has been a great xbow. My bow is not what I would say very loud. Is it worth the trouble to wrap the stirrup, put whiskers on the string, and all of the extra stuff that people do to quiet their xbows? I have listened to my xbow with my back turned from about 10 yards away, and the only thing that I hear is a very light thump. I have the R.E.D.S. on this bow, and I could not tell if they actually helped or not. This will be my first xbow deer season, so I don't really want to take chances, but I notice a lot of hunters that don't have any silencers whatsoever on their xbows, and they always get their game. Fwiw, I never put a whole lot of time in trying to quiet my vertical bows, just making sure there were no loose hardware and rattles, and I never had any issues while hunting period. Any input would be appreciated.

What he said. Having shot and hunted with recurve and compounds for over 35 years, the noise of a crossbow is noticeable especially to the shooter until you get used to it. My wife says that the only thing she hears is the thump of the arrow hitting the bag target.

You will do fine the way you are. My bows have wrapped stirrups and shrink tubing on the arrow retainer, And that's it.. Worked great last year. I mean you can do all the other stuff, if the noise bothers you that much. But it's not needed to fill your freezer....

There's no magic one thing you can do , but a combination of several . It honestly is a personal thing ! Deer could care less !

I worried about the noise until I shot my first deer, 29 yards, he never moved until the arrow went through. You'll be fine.

Thanks guys. The noise does not bother me that much. I honestly think that my grizzly is nearly as quiet as my Parker vertical bow, and I don't have any wrap on the stirrup, and no whiskers. I kind of think that some go overboard with the noise issue. When my wife shoots the bow, I can only hear a slight thump.

Imo, noise used to be more of an issue with the long limbed bows. My matrix 380 whispers sweet nothings compared to my Y25.

There was a point where I did everything I could to quiet down the Y25. Now I pretty much shoot her naked.

You owe me a key board! Funniest Avatar I've seen in a while. Still laughing.
As to the noise, I just turn my hearing aids off and the beast is quiet as a mouse.
