New Guy Checking in, Scope Question

Post by Microbuck »

Hello fellow Excalibur forum members! I've been lurking here for a few months and decided to sign up as I just bit the bullet and purchased a micro nightmare!

A bit of background, I'm an avid firearm shooter and enjoy spending all of my time outdoors (fishing, hiking, camping). Truth be told, I've been more focused on pest eradication (whistlepigs, raccoons, etc) than actual hunting, but I figure with the micro that just may change!

Anyway, down to the question. The package I purchased came with a free twilight dlx scope upgrade, but after doing more research it looks like that's one beefy scope. Anyone running a micro setup with the dlx? If not, suggestions on a more compact, decent optic? Leaning toward parting with the dlx and picking up a Nikon bolt, but would love some opinions from those with real world experience.

Looking forward to hanging around and learning a lot from you all, thanks!

First off, welcome, and congrats! I did pop a Nikon Bolt XR on my Micro when I had it, but the scope stayed here, and now resides on my M-330, it is great glass, but not speed adjustable. Some folks don't like that about them, but i have found it not to be an issue. You will need to spend some time at the range figuring out what works best for your zero point. Mine on the Micro was 25 yards for the main crosshair using 370 grain arrows at 329 FPS.

Good luck, and happy hunting!

Thanks for the reply! I've heard slightly negative things about both the reticle and the bdc...

I'm conflicted as I know the dlx is a superior product, but I'm just not sure it would be a good fit size-wise on the micro. Decisions... :?

It hurts me to say this, but it is the truest statement I could muster about the scope. Excalibur does not make them, they spec. and purchase them most likely from the best bidder. They are feature rich, quality average. The last thing a hunter needs is a bunk scope when they are 26' up in a stand. If you need spot on dialing in on the subsequent marks below 20 yards, get the Crossbones, or Hawke. The Nikon is great for me, and I'm sure several others, but not for everyone!

Here is one of the calculations i did. You can see that the hunting distances are pretty close. I have never shot a deer at exactly 30 yards!

Thank you my friend, you are a wealth of information! I appreciate the honesty.

I'll check out some hawke optics as well. Primarily looking for good optics first and foremost, lightweight and small footprint secondarily.

Thanks for the pic deerstalker! I may take a trip over to my local basspro to compare the two when my dlx arrives. Something tells me I will be leaning toward the smaller footprint. Still have decent eyes so I'm hoping the reticle won't bother me.

My 330 on the right sports the XR Nikon, the 335 on the left has the Redfield Revenge, and for the price, it is hard to beat! You can dial in the exact yardage points with the R.R., and it is made by Leupold. You can snatch them up for around $130. and you will not find a better scope for the $$.
