I have and use 8x42 Gold Ring Leupolds but the cost is probably more than your wanting to spend  HOWEVER, I also have a very light weight set of Leupold Yosimites in 6x30.... these are awesome and ssssooooo much lighter and have very good glass and great light gathering ability.
Even though Leupold does out source them to help keep the cost down, they stilll have that great Leupold warranty. and only about $125 everywhere. ( like Bi-mart for instance)

I'm tempted to get a set
10x42, camo, Zeiss, less than 300.00. Sounds like a tough call
I see the price at $479.99 from Boos link. Where are you seeing under $300.00 ?

Nikon Monarch 5's are excellent binoculars. They are not inexpensive but they are a good value considering the high optics quality. You could spend a lot more on optics that are only marginally better.

Try a pair of Carson binoculars.
Reasonable (about $250), clear/sharp, lightweight, great all around binoculars.

As this is the most recent thread I found when looking for binocular ideas, I thought I would post here. I went to one of my local gun shops and looked through some 10x42 Steiners and some 10x42 Vortex's. They were bright but I really didn't want 10 power and they are about double in cost of the Zen Rays. I bought the mid line ZRS HD Summit 8x42 ZenRays. I went to this because of the Dielectric mirror and the high transmission factor.
I used them in the stand yesterday. Down in the woods they were still bright, even at official sundown. There were way brighter than the "Dead Zone" scope on my Grizzly. If I had seen a deer there is no way I could have found it in the scope. I had been using a pair of older Bushnell 7x32's. I haven't compared them side by side at dusk yet but the ZenRays are much clearer none the less.
$239 shipped...

What's wrong with the Vortex? I have used them for years and they have the best warranty around....

I couldn't find any light transmission data on the Vortex binoculars even on their site. The Diamond back seems to be the only one similar to the ZenRay in specs and price and it is sort of Vortex's entry level product, all the other Vortex's get more expensive. I have other Vortex products and I like them.
On a side note the Vortex and the ZenRays look very similar, color, shape, layout but have a little different details in the moldings and knob texture. I wonder if one company makes the other companies product and rebrands it?

Bausch and Lomb 8x42 I've had these for over 15 years and are still crystal clear and water proof and fog proof.

i would get a pair of Leupy Yosemites to get you around and when your ready spend a little more on a HD bino. the Leupold Mojave pro guides HD version kill my Gold Rings. the 8x42 HD Mojaves can pick things out detail in dark nasty brush. recently used on a 2 week hunt. totally impressed.

I would check out the Leupold Yosimite series... great optics as well as their lifetime warranty. I feel they rival my Heavy Gold ring 8x42's but weigh less than 1/2 of what the G/R's weigh... Usually forund for less than $150 in 6 or 8 power... Personally I prefer the 6 power as they really gather light and perform great at Dawn and Dusk.

With my limited resources, I could really only buy one pair. The Mojaves would be out of my price range

I have the ED3 10x42 and they are as clear and bright as any $1,000 + bino, at half the price.

Or....search the bird watcher forums, those guys know their binos.
Agreed. They are incredible for the money. Amaze me every time I look through them.
