A q for those with foc's

Post by one shot scott »

Does anyone band these heads?

I have heard that it's unwise to open/close these heads repeatedly (which I have done) and I'm wonding if it's not a good idea to put a dental band on them for insurance?

I shoot the 125 gr Trauma 3 1/8" 2 blade and it has a thick band on it.

if I didn't already have the FOCs I would likely be buying the traumas after seeing your pics! But I think I catch your drift. Traumas use bands so likely its ok with the foc

I ran into this same issue. As my very first post suggests, I ain't too swooft sometimes...

I used my supplied field points to rough sight my 380 and then I really wanted to see how the FOC's would work. First couple of shots were awesome. Dead on and got to see what the end result would look like. After that, the one I used for the majority of my shots became a flyer. Like "into the next county" flyer.

My thought that I was getting a blade opening at launch was pretty much confirmed. I plan on ordering another batch of FOC's when the price drops back to below $35 and make one of my originals a practice head.

Probably can't hurt to band them to begin with.

I think the foc has a clip to keep it closed.

they do. A divit clip of sorts. Which is what wears out when they open/close too often.

---- what Scott said....

I cleaned mine out and reset all the screws, shims and blades and it seems like it is back to spec, but I will band it just in case.

From what I have seen on the net, the band being used looks like an automotive O ring. Quite thick compared to other bands I've seen. It made me wonder how much kinetic energy is lost stretching the ring. :?: Any math wizs out there?

When using the FOC out of the 380 and 405 a dental band adds additional insurance to a well constructed 3" cut expandable broadhead. I feel that a band is not needed if shot out of a 355 Excalibur. There are two sets of blade indents that will accommodate an elastic and the FOC was engineered for this added elastic if used on the fastest crossbows. I use the most forward position

One day I stopped in the closest orthodontist office and kindly asked the receptionist If I could buy some heavier bands for hobby use and she nicely handed me a 250 count pack on the house.

I might add that I orient my FOC's at 9 and 3 o clock on deck.

good advice, Thanks Norman
I have not tested an actual head to see if they fly true to the supplied field tip. I assume you have? with bands and without?

Neil, I wired one FOC shut (added 8 grains) and it impacted repeatetly within 3/8" and 1/2" at 25 yards compared to the supplied 170 grain field tip. I found this ideal and did not change my scope setting.
