3 pointer yesterday
Got one yesterday morning about 9 a.m. in Delaware County. Been a windy, rainy season in NY this season so far on weekends, so no luck with the vertical bow.
Xbow started in NY on Saturday, so was hunting with the Matrix. Had a deer travel behind me Saturday morning in the thick stuff. Came within 10 yards and turned left away from me, couldn't tell if it was a buck or doe.
Sunday was in my stand before daylight. Around 9, I hear the heavy footsteps of a deer coming down the hill and passing behind me again on the same path. I watch it go past and hesitate at the break in the trail. It then decided to turn right - yes - that will take it right into my shooting lane.
I could see that it had 3 points on one side as is required in the antler restricted area I hunt in NY (hate the rule, but it is what it is, and that's another topic). There was no rack on the other side.
I had my crossbow ready and turned the red cross hair light on my scope on, as the deer was moving slowly into the shooting lane. Centered the top red cross hair about six inches behind and above the shoulder as it came into view and pulled the trigger.
It spun around and bolted. I could hear it running and then heard it crash down. I got down and went to find my bolt. Complete pass through. Saw the white fletchings were covered in red. I use carbon express quad pro broadheads (Walmart 3 for $12.99 specials) which have always worked great for me, although I don't think the broadheads make a difference as long as they are sharp and fly true and you hit the deer in the right place.
I walked in the direction it ran. No blood for 40 yards, then plenty of sign to follow. Found it about 130 yards from where I hit it. One of my friends that was hunting about a quarter mile away came over on his ATV to give me a hand after I field dressed it and helped me take it over to my ATV and get it out of the woods.
It was a nice size deer, definitely not a big deer but I am very thankful that I was able to get it. I looked at the side without the antler on it and it was broken off below the hair line; which is amazing as you could probably strike an antler with a hammer and not break it. This deer must have been in quite a fight to snap the rack off there.
Just dropped it off at the processor near Syracuse and I am waiting at a friends house to pick it up this afternoon before heading home. I will post a picture, hopefully tomorrow after I get home.

Congrats ,, More then what I've been seeing hunting the thumb of Michigan ,, I'd be happy with a three point or even a doe ..
Re: 3 pointer yesterday
When I order ribs I usually get a full rack....if shooting a deer I'd settle for a half rack too.
Congrats on your successful hunt.

Re: 3 pointer yesterday
Glad you had success. If I got one like that I'd use the antler to make something as a remembrance.

Congrats on gettin a good deer
Re: 3 pointer yesterday
All around good job! If you don't like a 3 point on one side antler restriction you would hate to hunt where I hunt in northern Missouri where there is a 4 point requirement. It is extremely hard to count 4 points on one side because brow tines can be so hard to spot in the dim light when bucks tend to move. We have lots of deer so the restriction isn't to keep the harvest down. It's just the Conservation Commission bowing to the trophy hunters.
Enough of my complaining, congratulations on a successful hunt.
