OT...help with unusual scope mounting--update, pics added

Post by Deaf jeff »

I have already asked 2 members via pm's/email and have come up empty. so I thought I would post this so it falls on more ears in hopes that an idea comes up.
I am looking for a way to mount a scope on my rifle(.308 encore) off to the side of the barrel rather than on top like normal or even ideas to make my present setup more solid.. the reason is my disabilities make me have to shoot right handed but use my left eye for sighting. in the past I have used a riser tube with 2 sets of rings. I first mount the riser tube in first set of rings like a normal scope would be mounted, before tightening the rings I rotate the tube approx. 90 degrees then tighten rings, then attach 2nd set of rings to the tube then attach the scope to the rings like normal. this way is not very solid with a lot of vibration and re-sighting more than I would like and am always looking for a way to improve this. an offset mount would work but the only offset mounts that I have seen(and I have checked out a lot online) move the scope forward or rearward not off to the side
thanks for reading

update... I have what I feel is a lot more solid setup with using GG&G 90 degree mounts. the scopes position is virtually the same as with the old riser tube setup. I am havin a heck of a time loading pics to photo bucket but here are the ones I did succeed loading

my picture taking is in need of help but i hope these are good enough so you can see what i am trying to show
the top is the new setup on muzzle loading barrel, bottom is old riser tube setup on .308 barrel but will be changed to be exactly the same as the new setup when I am finished

the view when shouldered

I do have to rotate the scopes so my elevation becomes windage and vice versa but I have had to do this since I had to start shooting this way so it is no big deal
I want to say thanks again to everyone that gave input. now I wait for warmer weather so I can give the mounts the most important test

Might be able to take one of the AK style of scope mounts and turn it on its side, drill holes through it that would match up to those on your barrel and mount your scope that way.

You might try a gun show looking for a side mount for an old top eject model 94 Winchester as they used to be fairly commonly. Others were drilled and tapped to locate the scope ahead of the ejection port .....

The newer ones were changed to eject to the right side,,,, ending the requirement for the side or forward located scope mounts.

thanks for the ideas so far, I will be getting into the details of the ideas once this hectic holiday season is over. there is a couple that I took a quik peak at that may be promising :D also received one via email that shows promise. I wish now that I would have asked for members opinions years ago. keep the ideas coming and thanks again everyone :!:

This is what came to mind when I read your post. Not sure if it offers you enough offset though?

The custom bracket that frisky posted is pretty trick as well. If you don't find what you're looking for I'd be happy to machine up a custom bracket for you if we can work out the specs/dimensions. :)

You probably have already thought of this . But you may also need a level of some sort . Too easy to cant with it mounted on the side .
