Now I really thought about going home but since I was already out and some time to kill I might as well try another spot on the same farm about 500 yds away. I still had my ladder stand up in the corner of a field that lead to a big swamp/marsh area right behind the stand. My thinking was any coyotes might want to head into the swamp to get away from this weather and bed down in there for the day.
I setup my decoy-caller 50 yds or so from my ladder stand. I would watch the field for any coyotes that might be making their way to the swamp plus always a chance for a coyote to come out of the swamp to the decoy. Either way I was going to give it a try…..
I wasn’t in my ladder stand more than 5 minutes when I seen this coyote come over the rise in the field about 170 yds out making her way toward me. She stops about 100 yds out and started mousing (jumping into the air, trying to land on a mouse or two-pretty cool)….. I tried to lip squeak her in a little closer but she was too busy trying to catch mice and kept ignoring me….
After about a minute of this, she stops and stiffens up, looks in my direction (wind change) and starts that fast walk ……I am out of here………. I already had her in my crosshairs so wolf out at her a couple of times before she stops. I immediately send the 55 gr .223 bullet her way. A couple of spins and she was down for the count…
Not a big coyote (probably this years pup) but a good looking/in good shape female coyote….

I took her into the swamp to get out of that snow squall to skin her out...
