New to the Excal Forums

Post by TenshiB »

[= Hey hey everyone. I'm new to these Excalibur forums, but not exactly brand new to hunting with a crossbow. I started out just petering around with a Barnett Revolution Avi a little during the deer season of 2013, and decided to really get into deer hunting and using a crossbow to do it in the 2014 season.. Didn't take too long to break the darned Barnett! Bound and determined to use a crossbow to take a deer, I went on the hunt for a new crossbow a.s.a.p. An old timer on Craigslist had an Axiom up for sale.. I wasn't too enthused with the speed, but I'd heard SO MANY great things about the brand, and figured I'd sacrifice speed for quality! A decision I'm SO pleased with!!

My name is John, and I'm from Georgia. I still have not taken a deer with the crossbow, but I did get my first deer this year (.243 in the last 30 minutes of the season). I'm now the proud owner of two Excaliburs; the Axiom that I mentioned above, and now an older-model Exomax that I bought from a good guy in the Excalibur group on facebook.

The Exomax is the type with the aluminum rail and no option for a cheek piece, so I'm thinking it's pre-2008, right? The main reason for me going ahead and creating an account on here is to learn MORE about this particular bow.. Any quirks or other subtle differences that it has compared to the newer Exomax models? I will try to post some pictures to cap off this post!

Looking forward to contributing to the conversations! I've been lurkin' and reading through these forums for almost a year now.. tired of not being able to jump in the fun! [=

Ok.. gonna try my shot at posting these pictures.. It's been a LONG time since I've dealt with a forum in this format. I do remember it can be tricky to get the hang of posting the pictures.. This first attempt is of my Axiom from this season. http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/Tensh ... e.jpg.html]Image

Welcome to the forum from another GA boy.

Looks to me like you have a Nikon on the Exomax and a Vortex XBR on the Axiom. I do believe I would be swapping the scopes around. The Vortex can be speed adjusted to get you pretty much dead on at 20-30-40-etc. while the Nikon can't thus the Nikon should be on the slower bow. I think the Vortex will probably be around 4 to 5 power on that bow but you will have to play with it a little to find the sweet spot.

I will look into personalizing my info here soon! I live in Thomson, GA, which is ~25 miles west of Augusta, GA. Glad to see some other Georgians who love their Excals! [=

As far as the scopes go, I will UNDOUBTEDLY be putting the nice little Nikon on the Axiom and putting that Vortex on the Exomax! They are both really great scopes and the Nikon and Triggertech Trigger was part of the deal on the Exomax. But I bought that Vortex Viper xbr when they went on sale on Amazon for around $260 with the plans to put it on whatever crossbow (Excalibur) I "upgrade to".

SO, now that I have my upgrade bow, I'll be playing around with the Vortex and Exomax in the next couple of weekends. It is AMAZING what you can do with the Vortex on the Axiom, but I'm really lookin' forward to what it'll do on the Exomax! Neither of the scopes have speed adjustment rings on them, and the Vortex's reticle is MOA based, which had me a little daunted until I learned all about it. Now I wouldn't have it any other way.. it is basically an HHA optimizer without the hardware when you have this reticle/scope. The magnification goes from 2.5x to 10x and I pretty much leave it at 5x. With it set halfway like that, the holdovers get me out to 75 yards with the Axiom! So with the Exomax, I think it'll get me out even farther.. Also if you zoom out to 2.5x you just do a little math and you've doubled your range if your bow will shoot that far. [=

Anyway, thank y'all for the welcomes and I'm lookin' forward to discussions and what-not!

Side note: I have NO plans to shoot deer nor any other game at the ranges I mentioned with the Vortex scope.. Only target shooting when taking the long shots. [=
