Waste of Acetone
Well, I just wasted a good part of my afternoon today. I also wasted a good bit of acetone.
Thanks to Hankenhunter I got educated to the fact that I could safely remove the stupid Zombie logo from my arrows. I got my arrows from one of our site arrow makers, and he did a good job. It's not his logo, and he didn't put it on the shaft. He didn't cause the problem.
When an arrow wearing that kind of logo is shot into a block target, two things happen. First of all, the logo gets smeared. Even if you thought it fancied up the arrow to start with, it immediately stops being fancy. It looks ugly.
The second thing is that it almost welds the arrow into the block. With our high powered bows, an arrow is already jammed in deep. Then, thanks to a useless, ugly logo, it's stuck in there that much more securely.
I don't actually care if the shaft manufacturer (or even the custom maker) plaster arrows with their advertising. They can put their phone number, their address, heck, even their DNA profile on there, but it darned well better not make a mess like mine used to be.
I don't expect an arrow maker to use up his time scrubbing off useless logos. Most of them do it as a labor of love. An arrow maker doesn't make big bucks, considering the time they spend actually making the arrows. So I guess the only recourse is to ask the arrow maker to start with plain, clear blanks, and keep them that way, unless the pattern or writing is a permanent, not smearing, ink or paint.

Re: Waste of Acetone
I have tried numerous times to get that .001 off the shaft. How did you do it?
If they cared enough they would print a logo with whatever method they use to put on the .oo1 (laser?)
but I find the zombie print comes off pretty easily actually with the acetone. They are such good arrows its worth the very small amt of hassle. My arrow builder warned me about the potential problem of the label getting welded to the "foam" targets.

Ahh yes the old bling bling on our arrows. Good for sales but useless for hunting and target shooting. Good luck getting black eagle to stop putting the goofy labels on the arrows. I wipe mine off before I start making my arrows. No big deal but I agree it is a pain and they look much better label free..

Laquor( sp?) thinner will remove painted labels, too.put it on a rag and it won't take much. Save your acetone for more important operations.
Re: Waste of Acetone
It doesnt take much acetone either. i maybe used half OZ removing 2 dozen labels.
Mine get removed before they even get cut to length.

Seems to me they have to put a label on the arrows for liability .
Seems to me I saw a post on another web site I remember Jerry at South Shore taking about it.

Re: Waste of Acetone
I don't mind the labels. I won't shoot arrows with em but removing is easy. What I hate even more is if they were not easily identifiable when I get them as to exactly the model arrow from the manufacturer I chose. So for piece of mind I'll gladly remove the label myself
Saying that I don't think it would be all that hard to print the model arrow in the same matter they identify 26/.001 or whatever length and straightness is, just a simple S.T.,, Z.S.,, Ex. that for me would be nice!

Re: Waste of Acetone
I just went through my arrows yesterday putting on my own "code" so I know what shaft they are and what insert is installed. Ex. "16" ZS 110" means 16" arrow, Zombie Slayer with a 110gr brass insert. Once the logo is gone a Zombie looks exactly like an Executioner which looks exactly like a Gold Tip....wildcatter wrote:I don't mind the labels. I won't shoot arrows with em but removing is easy. But I agree...I don't like to logo either and it comes off before I ever build an arrow.

What are you using to mark the arrows with that will not rub off after a pass through?nchunterkw wrote:I just went through my arrows yesterday putting on my own "code" so I know what shaft they are and what insert is installed. I used more than 1/2 ounce doing fewer arrows. Maybe it was because mine had been shot into a foam block and had already smeared. Maybe your shafts were fresher from the factory and the solvent could penetrate easier. Maybe my acetone is less concentrated than yours.
Maybe I'm just older than you and grumpier and less patient......

Re: Waste of Acetone
I just use a silver sharpie but I am not looking to keep it there permanently....although I think it would stay on through a deer. I have several combinations of arrows laying around and don't want to mix them up. When I sight in for a group they just stay in the quiver until I use them up.robertyb wrote:What are you using to mark the arrows with that will not rub off after a pass through?nchunterkw wrote:I just went through my arrows yesterday putting on my own "code" so I know what shaft they are and what insert is installed. I really should just settle on one recipe...... But what fun would that be ?

Re: Waste of Acetone
My practice arrows get the acetone both and hunting arrows keep the logos. This way I don't mix up practice/huntin shafts. The moose, deer and hogs kinda like the zombie logo
Re: Waste of Acetone
I'm another logo remover. Doesn't take much time with regular acetone. I like the look of the naked arrows.
