A friend of mind recently purchased a micro 335 1st gen (used but barely original owner had a hard time cocking) anyway he had a limited amount of money unemployed and bought it. Then he asks me if it's ok to hunt deer with the 'stock' xcal Quill arrows with 100gr Broadheads? I told him it's OK to do so. Am I correct? What kind of performance can he expect?
Thanks.

They come with heavier heads for a reason...accuracy. I don't recommend 100gr points with stock arrows. He'd do better with 125 grain points...better still with 150+gr points.

He may have to try a smallish broadhead like a Slick Trick Standard or a mechanical like an Exact. Low FOC allows the broadhead to guide the arrow and with no or very little blade exposed, he might get acceptable flight.

100GR heads still hit the target with authority on the Micro 335. On some 3D targets, good luck getting the arrow out.

As paul said is correct. Some are using 125 heads at 375 fps...My quills shot better than my custom arrows with 150 gr point after i squared the points and turned the vanes ..paulaboutform wrote:They come with heavier heads for a reason...accuracy. quills weight 400 grs with 150 gr points ..if we listen to experts here most shoot a 16.5 inch custom arrow out of their micros ..most like their arrows to weight around 400 grs area ...
Re: xcal Quill arrows 4 hunting
Just my 2 cents. as I'm no expert but I took down multi large WT's last fall shooting my vintage Micro 335 and stock quills with 100gr. RamCat's I had complete pass through on all. I even had 1 that went thru the off side shoulder, all shots under 30yds. They shot for me same hole to 40yds. This year I upgraded to custom 15.5" ZS they weight 262grs. and I'm shooting 104gr. RamCat plus lumenok and out to 50 yds. I cannot shoot at the same bull. certainly if I was shooting thick skinned game or at longer distances I would want more FOC.

Re: xcal Quill arrows 4 hunting
So what you folks are saying is try to get around 400gr with BH? Is that correct?
So if the arrow weights 250gr then use 150gr BH or if arrow weights 300gr then use a 100gr BH.
Hope I got this right?

Tell him to use Bolt cutters, and he will be perfectly fine. I'd be willing to bet more deer drop to a stock setup than a custom setup each and every year.
