I'm wondering if the REDS short lifespan wasnt something that came out of some of the earlier models or batches.
I havent worn a set of REDS out yet. All of mine are the new style with the half ball.

That may be the case... I don't think the ones I had were made using the 1/2 ball but rather the round one. :roll: :mrgreen:

The old ones with the almost full ball style wore quickly. I rotated mine regularly and ended up with a hole in the middle. Once I removed the post and cut half the ball off (like the new ones) that problem was solved.
As to your question and as mentioned above, your string will settle as wax leaches out but if you have the original factory endless loop string it won't settle nearly as much as a Flemish string. I'd set the gap between your bumpers and string (known as brace height) to 1/4" and keep an eye on it from there.
