The broad broadhead discussion
So this year I'll be hunting whitetail from a treestand with an Excal 308 short (not banshee) . Shes got and xb30 pro scope, custom gold tip swifts from wyvern (370gr) and the micro reds system. The very loaded question... what broadhead should I be using?

Fixed or mechanical?

Open to suggestions for sure. I hear tell mechanicals dont like to open at slower speeds but, that's just what I hear. I've shot the 150gr bolt cutters the last 3 years out of my matrix 330 and they have been amazing. Just wondering at slower speeds, would it be too much weight on the front?
Re: The broad broadhead discussion
I use the Muzzy HB Ti and it’s the best of both worlds! 2 bleeder fixed blades and 2 mechanical blades. Not a problem with working properly out of any of my Excalibur bows! Good luck!

Stick with your Boltcutters and your all set!

Re: The broad broadhead discussion
I shoot fixed from everything. The bow design is simple and reliable, so I choose the same for my BH. At slower speeds you won't have trouble having excellent flight. Blotcutters, RamCats (my fav.) SLick Trick 150 or 125 Magnus Black Hornet....all good choices. Others will chime in as well.

Good advice right there, these have been used on just about everything you can hunt with great results!

Nope, you will drop speed a little with the heavier bolts, but you will not miss it. Set up your scope using the 150 grain field points that came with your package, then test the 4 arrows you want to hunt with using ONE broadhead, just switch it to test each arrow, spin test them also before shooting. Most folks switch away from Bolt Cutters because of availability at their local shops. If you have them, use them!

Yes ? Use the 150 Boltcutter on that arrow for any game animal.
The Ontario record moose was shot with a Excal Vixen at less than 250 fps and a similar broadhead.
Full pass thru at 27 yards.

Re: The broad broadhead discussion
Heavy arrows with lots of FOC get way better penetration than light fast ones. I'm shooting 550gr arrows from my 53# recurve (that I only draw to about 49#)

I like mechanicals; specifically Afflictor broadheads. With the proper shot placement you should be able to use a mechanical. I would choose wisely as some broadheads don’t perform as well as others. Use google search for reviews and You tube for independent tests when choosing. I use 125 grain but 150grain will work too. Lots of choices available; use the search tab in this forum to start. There should be several threads to read.

Re: The broad broadhead discussion
I am not sold on the not opening deal at slower speeds. I would be more concerned with penetration/pass through at slower speeds but I also realize foc has a lot to do with it.
Last fall I used 18" Spynal Tapps w/110 grain brass inserts tipped with 125 grain Nap Spit Fire 3 blade broad heads with my Matrix 310, both deer were complete pass through's. (One was at 30 yards and the other 42 yards) I use custom made flemish twist strings from string makers on this site and the total weight of my arrows is 426 grains. I'm sure my speed is well below 300 fps with this set up.
