collapsible/retractable stock project
collapsible/retractable stock project
I am thinking about a compact, portable crossbow project for easy packing in and treestand friendliness. I'm planning to base this on a Phoenix chassis.
I would replace the hard stirrup with a loop of heavy tie-down strap material. This way it will fold away for transport. For the stock I'm thinking of an AR-15 or Mini-14 collapsible stock adapted to the crossbow frame.
Think of how nicely this would strap to a backpack climber for long hikes in...it would be wider than it would be long. I think it would be a slick hunting rig.
What do you guys think? Any good sources where I can see some of these stocks?

good idea! I love the stirrup Idea redlabel...However when I head to my stand I stalk my stand Im ready for a shot as I go..there have been many times Ive happened on a deer browsing..I wouldnt want my xbow on my back with me empty handed..there have been a few times though when I wished I didnt have to carry my xbow as Im humpin to my area.but the way my luck goes as soon as I strap my xbow on my back and take off ole mossy would appear from thin air, broadside, 25yds, lookin the otherway
...but your idea is good versatility is great.

Dedicated.... ta all the sweet Bucks yet ta die!
I think the idea is terrific.
The only beef I've ever had about a crossbow has been that they are terrible things to try to manoeuver through the woods. That makes them less than ideal for still hunting.
That said, a folding or collapsible stock would make them way more user friendly getting to and from the stand as well as trying to fit them over, under or through fencelines.
With a folding stock I could see myself attaching it neatly to the back of my portable stand. If that could be done all of the sudden life would be alopt easier.
Good luck.
Cheers!

folding stock
RedLabel, I have a folding stock crossbow stock. I don't remember the make, but it is not a real quality bow. The stock would require some machine work to put in a good trigger and to attach a good prod. I will get a digital photo of it and post here. Probably won't happen til tomorrow, though. Oh, how do I post a photo here?
folding stock
RedLabel, I was just poking around on eBay and found a complete crossbow that is the same as the one I have a stock for. It is item #7131825517. I just have the bare stock with no prod or trigger. I have no connection to the guy on eBay, I just have a similar part.

RedLabel, I live in southern Maine, Windham, about 13 mile nw of Portland. I brought the stock to work with me this morning. I'll try to get a photo to post, or if you like, I'll email it to you. If you want me to email the photo, drop me a note at mwl@montalvo.com.
