Random question I know; but in the wild, can bears get so big they can no longer climb trees?
I'm not a bear hunter yet so I don't know their behaviors very well, but my sense is that the end game for a bear is to become so boss and fat that they no longer need to climb trees to avoid danger!? Is it a defense mechanism that they cease to use at some point in their maturity growth?
Yes, bears are unable to climb trees when they get too big.

I have a huge boar that comes around in Spring and dominates or destroys the ground feeders that I have out for deer (Along with assorted smaller bears) last year I put up a hanging feeder on steel cable between two big pine trees. He could not climb either tree and the videos of him trying to figure out ways to get the feeder were interesting and comical. He even resorted to pulling down smaller trees (3-4” diameter) with no luck. He is a brute and has been coming around for 6-7 years. Impressive bear that I would love to see with my rifle in hand. Huge black bears can’t climb…so I’ve observed as gravity wins every time.
I have saw n watched a few yogi's through the years. Its not that they can't climb ! Its more about their weight being supported by the limbs of trees they would go up. They can become the baddest thing around but they can not protect their back side in the open
At seven feet seven inches and better than a 22" skull, not much was going to mess with him.
Until he ticked me off that is...

I don't think he'd want to share!!! He doesn't look like the "sharing kind"!!
It begs the question...who's hunting who?

How thick would you have to apply Tanglefoot to keep him off?
I'm afraid they ain't made a tube of it quite that large yet!!!
And besides, if it made him mad, then you'll have to deal with that aspect of it too!!

His brother, although a tad shorter, had an even better scoring skull:
Unusually large snout for a bruin over 500 pounds which gave him the advantage in that regard:
This one could still climb a little.
