Nasty downburst

Post by Species8472 »

Had a thunderstorm yesterday afternoon with a very localized downburst. Split a locust tree in half next to our deck. Planted that tree as a seedling 32 years ago 6 years before i even built the deck knowing exactly where i wanted it to provide shade from the afternoon sun while sitting on the future planned the deck. In the last 5 years was just really coming to serve its purpose. Have dealt with 100s of downed trees over the years but this is the first time in my life where a tree coming down has made me upset. At least no property damage but won't be replaced in my lifetime.

That tree does look unsavable. Too bad! At least you'll have some excellent firewood. Both black and honey locust make some of the best firewood there is. I like locust trees too, but I'm surprised to see that you planted one in your yard. Most people would avoid them because of their thorns. They are pretty trees with pretty wood.

I had a downburst on a jobsite I was involved with 2 summers ago. 50x100 building roof being installed, it forced the walls out and drove the trusses down to the floor. One guy under the trusses and 2 guys in the trusses when it happened and they rode them down.

My property is 3 km away, nothing. The building is 200 yards off the road, which was bone dry. When the ambulance pulled to the site they thought the well was overflowing as the site was flooded under water.

Absolutely crazy, it was localized as in maybe 250m across, or less.
