Is This Normal?

Post by Galgo »

HI All.

I took my new Exocet out to shoot it for the first time and I gotta say if anyone out there doubts the accuracy, simplicity and power of these machines - don't. I am thoroughly impressed.

I did have one problem though. I used the Excalibur arrow puller to remove the bolts from the Excalibur foam block. Four of six of the arrows failed and the rear aluminum inserts came out of the arrows with very little force applied. I used furniture polish on the bolts and most of them failed after only 3 - 6 shots max. is this normal or is it a design flaw? Can I replace them with some sort of epoxy. Or is this just the cost of practising? Hope not cuz it's already getting expensive.

Oh ya two arrows had field points and two had broadheads. Let me know your suggestions. Appreciate the help.

No not normal, if aluminum just heat and put sme hot melt glue on the insert and shove it back in, If carbon use 24 hour epoxy. Reads like a poor glue job.

Thanks Gary. Ya I should have mentioned they were carbon gold tip laser 2's. Should I talk to Excalibur? I'm just worried that my glue job will never be as good as the factory...when they do right I mean

the inserts are short, and as you mention the arrow puller does not work well screwed into them...stick them back in with duraloc vane adhesive, and they will never come out...

I never had any problem with my home made arrow puller and GT inserts, you must have gotten some bad glue jobs.
This works for me. On my home made carbon shafts, I use Locttite 444 instant adhesive on both inserts an vanes. I never had Any problem.
This adhesive is Part No. 12292 TAK PAK FOR PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD ASSEMBLY. :D

Galgo,

I realize this does not help you now but BJ sells a handy little set of pliers that have been "Mcguivered" for pulling arrows. I dont have a picture of it but I thought I seen one a while back if anyone has a pic of it could you post it for Galgo? This works really slick for pulling bolts out of targets and McKenzie's. Just thought I would pass that along.

Galgo.....when you use the puller, are you pulling straight back? I've always found twisting "clock-wise" as I pulled at the sametime recovered bolts from targets much easier......just a thought

Thanks for the help guys. To answer the questions:

Newparadox:

Just send your bolts to me. I don't seem to have any problem pulling the inserts out

The McGuiver pliers sound interesting. I'll do a search for them

Good advice. I think Digger mentioned that in an earlier post and yes that's what I was doing. Seems that the little twist especially at the beginning "unsticks" the arrow a little. I would do that just enough to break the surface tension then just think about pulling them out and 'POP' :x

I've got some locktite at home here so I'll try that first and see how she goes. Thanks again.

Arrow removal

Dan Miller sells a special pliers type arrow removal tool that works very well for removing your arrows. Not very expensive either.

Just to give an update. I used locktite and reinserted the four inserts that pulled out. I had my doubts cuz three of them had almost no resistance going back in. Shot them yesterday and two pulled right out on the first shot. Two others have held so far for about five shots each. Must have been a bad batch or something.

Galgo take some model CAV-super glue and them inserts won't be pulling out....It's a super gule you can order or pick up from a hobby shop, its a gap filling type so be carefull or you will be re-tapping your threads if not used sparingly.. :D
