OT - Fly Fishing

Post by Zeke »

OK... I know exactly jack squat about fly fishing, but a buddy at work wants to go.

SO... I see where fly rods/reels/line are various sizes and whatnot - what's a good weight or size for a real "all purpose" type outfit... by "all purpose" I mean that it won't be used exclusively for trout - in fact, it'll probably be used mostly for things ranging from big bluegills to medium sized bass - probably no larger than 3 pounds.

Can ya steer me in the right direction??

Zeke,
For what you're going after (bluegills & smaller bass) a 5 or 6 weight would be fine. I use a 6 weight because there are some heftier bass where I fish, even though I usually catch the little ones
I bought a Cabela's "kit" (graphite rod, reel, line, leaders, and an assortment of flies) a few years ago for less than $80. I have been very pleased with it.

A little off topic but I bought a 9 foot fly rod and put an ultralight reel on it and went to Lake Simcoe with it last fall and caught 30-40 jumbo perch on it (10-13 inch range). Great to cast and to catch them with it.

Thanks for the ideas gents - and wabi, that kit sounds like the way to go - might start with a little low-end deal first. Fishing gear doesn't seem to retain its value like Excalibur Crozboos - so I hate to spend a bunch and end up not liking it!

And yes - ultra lights are a hoot - got me a new one for my birthday this year - little 2 piece spinning outfit - makes a bluegill feel like a big hawg.

Y'all have a good week.
