Success for Pops and I

Post by LoneWolf »

My father and I got to our spot and got done setting up by 6:00 am. We could see about 15 birds way out at the other end of the field maybe 400 yards away. I pulled out my Quaker Boy Triple Threat Slate Call and let out a series of yelps, right after I put the slate call down we could here gobbling all around us and this time it was coming from much closer than the birds that were at the other end of the field. That's when I turned and looked at pops and said they're coming in!...

I waited about a minute and could not see anything, so gave out another series of yelps, and again got answers from 4 or 5 different gobblers in all directions around us ( WE WERE SURROUNDED!) and this time the gobbling came from much closer than the first answers I got. So again, I put my slate call down and grabbed my Paradox and waited for the parade to come to the decoys I had set up 20 yards out. I spotted a Jake about 100 yards away and coming our way, then he stopped at about 75 yards and looked at the decoys for a good minute. It was then I grabbed the slate again and gave a few purrs and put down the slate and again grabbed the Paradox and got ready hoping he would respond. Sure enough he came running right towards the decoys and stopped in front of my Jake decoy at 20 yards. It was right then I took the safety off and took aim for the vitals and let it fly, the arrow found it's mark and my Jake didn't go 10 yards and he was down!. I walked over and collected my bird from where he lay expired. Then I heard more gobbling coming from very close, so I hurried up and got back in the blind and told my father to get his shotgun ready there's couple of more coming in. No sooner did I say that, I could see two coming fast across the field heading right for the decoys. My father put up his shotgun and BANG!, another one down!, so I ran out of the blind and grabbed him as he was flapping his wings but it was only nerves. Anyway, it was a great morning spent with my father, and we both had our birds down by 7:00 am... Tomorrow's another day and we each have another tag!...:D

Congrats! Nice gobblers!

How much did that blind cost you, and what make/model is it? I'd like to get one for turkey hunting, but mostly deer hunting since I'm afraid of heights.

Sure enjoyed reading of your hunt with you and your father, Mike. Great pictures, I think your bird is bigger. Your a good hunter, you sure know how to whack'em and stack'em.

Send us pictures of your next hunt.
