A Black Bear Encounter to Remember

Post by LoneWolf »

Black Bear Encounter to Remember...

On the first week of the hunt I had a few firefighters up for a hunt. All was going well and the baits were getting hit hard, and often. So it was common sense that the baits had to be replenished on daily bases. We knew there was a couple of big ones in the area, and one huge one... Anyhow after Joe (not real name) hunting a site for a couple of days and passing on a couple of smaller bears at that stand site, he asked me if I would take him to hunt another bait site about a mile away from the first bait he was hunting. So hey, he's the paying client therefore away we went. We jumped on the ATV and I went and dropped him off at the second bait site then headed back to camp.

At around 7:30pm I got a call from Joe on the two way radio telling me he had shot a huge black but the bear took off into the thick/dirty old cutover. I asked Joe where he hit the bear and he told me he was positive he had hit him right through both lungs with a 10 yard shot and that he heard the bear crash after a few death screams, so I told him to stay up in his tree and hang tight until I got there. When I arrived at the spot I asked the hunter in which direction the bear took off to and so on. Anyway, we found the arrow and it had good lung blood all the way up the arrow right to the fletching. So I turn to Joe and tell him to follow me and seal my a$$ as I only have a knife on my belt. I'm following the blood trail tracking the animal in this thick stuff that is so thick you can't even see 10 feet in front of you!. We got about 50 yards into it and all of a sudden we hear a big growl which I figured was a little ways in more but I found out how wrong I was...

When I moved another 20 feet or so into this thick stuff staying on the blood trail I heard branches breaking and a louder growl the next thing I knew I was dwarfed by this huge and really pissed off bear, standing up on his hind legs no farther than 10-15ft from me and as I said he was really pissed off. But Joe who was right on my tail and good enough of a shot with his bow ( darn good thing) to give him a finishing shot right into the heart, then the bear swung around and went another 20 yards before pilling up. After we were done gutting the bear it was clear that he had hit the bear with a single lung shot and not both lungs... Anyway, I'm home safe and sound and Joe has his trophy black bear weighing in at 536lbs!... 8)

 I think I'll stick with deer hunting. I'm glad you and Joe were not part of the bait pile.

When the bush is that thick running shoes don't help. But then again you would only have to out run Joe. Glad you're okay.

A.W, Actually without a dougt Joe would have out-ran me without a problem due to a number of reasons... I was the closest to the bear, he don't smoke, he's younger, he's got longer legs, and being a firefighter who is in very good shape, and I smelled like fish and grease....

Sliver, If I would not have hit the outhouse before I received the call I probably would have had to change them!. I tell ya, I'm sure every hair on my body stood on end, even the hair on my legs!...... It was quite the rush!... It was my being careless, I should have payed more attention and proceeded with caution as I knew he was close, cause I could smell him way before he stood up...

Bob, My fault on my part... I thought about bringing a firearm with me but figured I didn't need it after I was told it was a double lung shot. Trust me I have learned my lesson the hard way. I won't be going in after another bear without fire power, I can guarantee that...

black bear encounter

First time replying to you. Good to speak to fellow Bear hunters. I just got back from setting up a Clearing and Bait area at my place. I've only had one or two close calls with Bears, really close, to mention. Once with a weapon in hand, once without (one to many!) As I've told the other fella's I stalk with a rifled Shot gun, and tree stand with my EXmag, so I'm always close to something, even when I dont expect to be!
Glad you made out allright. My best Bear trophy was only 360 lbs.
This year I'm trying to break it. I only hunt alone so it's lots of work with big Brutes!

LW,

Do you have any pictures of that bear? I've never seen a black bear that big.

Partikle,

Yes I have a few pics and I wish I could post a couple but I don't have permission to post them, not as of yet anyways. But I should have a web-site up and running soon and a pic of that bear along with some other bear pics which were taken this spring will be on the web-site. But I know what you mean, that is a big bear but after the fall bear hunt being closed for 8-9 years which is when most of the bears were being shot ( during deer season) and the locals don't bother with the spring bear hunt in many areas of the province of Quebec. So in my opinion is that's the reason why some of these bears have gotten so old and big, besides being fed like pigs since the beginning of May could have helped some too... As I said, you'll get to see a pic of him!...

Now that's a great story! 8) Someone was watching over you!...this time!

That's one heck of a huge black bear! On my first caribou hunt, our guide had to dispatch a large black that was tearing up the camp. In all of his 20+ years of bear hunting, the guide said he had never seen such a large bear. It looked like a small grizzlie!
