Deer Butchering at Home

Post by ecoaster »

There were a few posts last year about butchering your own deer. I had printed the article from a link to the Indiana Sportsman page, but lost the print out. If anyone knows of some good links with step by step pictures it would probably benefit all.

I cut up my doe on the weekend with no problems, but it got me thinking about how I had no clue the first time and the posts on home butchering really helped me. I think it is a good way to end the hunt. I certainly appreciate the venison alot more if I have to work my butt off for it.

I have a basic setup in my shop for deer butchering. A bench topped with a section from an old bowling alley lane (the hard maple portion), a "do-it-yourself" grade slicer and a small electric grinder, a meat wrapping paper dispenser from a grocery store that closed, and an assortment of knives & saws. If it's cold I will do it myself and enjoy the process and procedure. If it's warm weather I pay the processor (luckily a long-time friend of mine) to hang it in his walk-in cooler and cut it up for me. Right now, with this weather we're having, it would definately be a very quick trip to his cooler!!!!!!!

The same guy that put up that thread last year on the now defunct IndianaSportsmen is in the process of putting anther one together for HuntingIndiana.

He has to get new pictures as Hutn101 lost his.

We have an area in HuntingIndiana called "The Butcher Shop" where processing is discussed..

Excellent post, thanks guys.....Time spent with my friends helping butcher the deer after the hunt are even more memorable than the hunt itself!

Hey wabi. We have rapped our own deer and beef for years. Like you putting it in that white rapping paper you can buy at the meatlocker. About 3 years ago we started putting our deer meat in the ziplock freezer bags. We get as much air out of the bag as we can. They work great the deer will keep at least 13 months that waywith no problem. It's faster and easier.
I had a brother that put his in two bags. I feel that's a waist. All my deer is gone in less than one year and it keeps fine.

Ecoaster, I downloaded the video and still have it. Email me if your interested. It's 26.8 meg, about 15 minutes long. Might take a while depending on your ISP speed. Let me know, -JR
Stock Exomax and now a Micro 335. :)

I've always used plastic bags and then the freezer paper. Keeps just fine for months and months.
