Annoying little beggar !

Post by R.J. »

During one of my recent light physio / walking / scouting trips .... I was quitely takeing in the scenery at the base of a dead pine tree when this little guy spent about 10 mins chatter/scolding me and dropping de-seeded pine cones on my position ....

Ballsy little beggar !

Still fun to get out .... you never know what you will encounter , on the next trip out ..... this little guy had me laughing out loud as he pelted me with half eaten cones !   Obviously he thought I was in his space !

Great pictures RJ. You seem to have a much brighter outlook on these barking critters than I do. When I'm sitting quietly and one starts to continuously bark, bark, bark I have thoughts race through my mind to end the situation. I've never had one try to drop stuff on me though. Its kinda funny that the little bugger was that persistent.

Nice pics R.J!
What does it mean when one of those little buggers are way out of sight and they start sounding off?
What are they barking at then?

Often they are barking at nothing. They are kind of like the boy who cried wolf. But I still pay attention when they do because it just might be something other than a false alarm. You never know they might be warning you a deer is on it's way.

They've busted me a few times. Sound like a fire alarm going off on a calm windless evening.

Yep ... I have had lots of experience with these little red demons ! Usually they just sound off , bark , chatter and cause a fuss .... this little guy was real bold !

I would be sitting there , my hood was up ... all of a sudden " whump " .... I look up and he's staring at me chattering , maybe 3-4 feet above my head ! I made a couple of arm waves at him to scare him off ( this usually keeps them at bay ) ... but he wouldn't budge ! Kept pelting me until I finally moved on ..... I had to take his picture to show my wife and daughter when I got home .... the whole thing was quite comical !

As for sounding off in the distance ..... " heads up " sometimes it's deer moving that sends them off ...

Here is a post on that subject from back in 2003

Had 5 young grey squirrels in the oak tree next to mine (the one the stand is in) yesterday morning. They kept me entertained with their antics for an hour. Today it was nuthatches & a red-bellied woodpecker for entertainment.
Sure wish it would be big deer soon
