New Vixen speed ?

Post by Larry W »

Just put my new Vixen Deluxe with FF flemish string (#1989) ,1 1/8" brace thru the chrono. Has about 50 shots on it. Using a 20" 365 gr. Gold Tip Laser II,alum inserts front and rear,4" duravanes and 125 gr. tip it hit 277 fps. Does this sound about right for this setup? If I change to a 100gr. tip I don't think the FOC would be enough. Would this be good enough for 35-40 yds. whitetail hunting? Thanks for your help. Larry

Ayep sure reads good, however Larry W I would go for the faster bolt if I was shooting 35 - 40 yards. With your set up now I would limit my shot to 25 -30 yards. Just my .25 cents worth.... :D Check your FOC with the 100gr tip and I think you will find it ok. You can also drop to a 18" bolt and 125gr heads and be ok, thats one of my set ups.

I have a similar set up with my '01 black Vixen, but I use 18" Gold Tips and 100gr broadhead, at 325-328 gr total and 294 fps. I can hit a target consistantly at 50 yards but only try to keep within 35 yds at best. In 14 years huntin with a xbow, mostly with 150 lb Wolverines and Vixens my longest shot was 27 yd.
Your set up is good for 35 yards or less if I was using it.

AS long as your total weight for broadhead and shaft is 350 gr or more you are good to go.

Digger, I think you said that gold tips are 220 grains, which would make that set up too light, but I also heard that golt tips are 260 grains ,with 100 grain broadhead would be ok. Would like to know the weight of the gold tips for sure ?

I shoot 18" Gold Tips that weiht 225 gr Plus my vanes and broadhead for 326-329 gr Vixens can shoot as low as 325 gr safely.
