One Enlish tradition I intend to keep up with whilst living in Canada is the November 5th bonfire night!
This tradition goes back 400 years or so. On this date in 1605, a chap named Guy Falkes was caught in the cellars of the houses of Parliment in London, along with Twelve others, having planted 36 barrels of gunpowder, with the intention of blowing up the entire building, and everyone in it! He was tortured to confession, and then hung, drawn..and quartered!!
Ever since then, the people of England have "celebrated" his death by lighting huge bonfires, and thousands of firecrackers!. Sadly, I'm not alowed the firecrackers here, but I will be doing my bit with a bonfire! Mary and I have spent the day collecting firewood in preparation for the fire on Saturday! It may not be on a par with the one's back home, but it will be fun. I intend to have roasted potatoes, cooked in the bonfire of course, and some roasted marshmellows also. this will be followed by a good bottle of wine, and maybe a few other goodies!
The only difference is that I consider it a time of "mourning" the death of Mr Falkes, not celebrating it!! Shows what I think of Politicians eh?
I'd like to invite you all along, but it is a bit of a drive!!
Hope you all have a good weekend,
Grizzled.
