Newby to crossbow hunting
I live in the niagara region. I have family and friends that hunt. I have decided to join them. I have been researching the excalibur line of crossbows. I see that you don't need a pal. Do you still need to take a hunting course in order to register for a tag or hunting licence? I was going to take a one stop course soon, whenever I can get time off that corresponds with a course date. That way I would be able to participate with my wifes relatives on the shotgun hunts. I would appreciate whatever information that you all may be able to send my way for a greenhorn who wishes to start hunting. In the meantime I am dwelving into the mnr book again. Thanks JR
No you don't need a PAL to buy a crossbow but you will need to take the hunting course to gain a hunting tag. I would take the all in one course if I were you. You may want to hunt with a firearms at some point and so why not get everything done at once. Take a look at the Phoenix as a good choice in the Excalibur line.
As for a shotgun for deer hunting I would go with the Remington 870 Express combo. You never know what your going to be hunting in the future and so I think it is better to get the combo. With the two barrels there's not much you won't be able to hunt. The rifed barrel will take care of your deer hunting needs and the smooth bore will do everything else. You can get chokes for the Remington anywhere so this will let you hunt anything from Turkey to rabbits. Good luck with it and welcome to the forum.

It/s probably not a bad idea to take the courses and get your PAL and that way you have it. Lord only knows what the government of the day has in store for us next.
Your research is bang on if you are looking a buying an Excal and joining the forum....There is more knowledge and great people on here than one can shake a stick at~!

If all you'll be doing is deer hunting I'd go with a vixen or pheniox. Either will take care of any large game but would prefer exocet 200 or better for moose. Saying that I hunt moose with my 175# exocet with all the confidence in the world. Welcome to the forum hope you enjoy. As for shotgun all major manufactors offer dual barrel combos. I like Beretta and Remington, but can't really go wrong with name brands.
