Tye, the stock is stained with two coats of Birchwood Casey.

Highlander, depending on the design, Mark's wood stocks can add up to two pounds, making the bow better balanced and more accurate. After installing the stock, my 3D scores have risen dramatically, of course I suppose getting new eyeglasses didn't hurt either.

What does the stain do though.

Like I know it gives it a nice shine, but aside from that, what's it do?

It brings out the grain of the wood.

Yes I know that, but, does it weather proof it or something performance wise?

I'm just thinking, I could get an 'unfinished' stock, and 'finish' it myself as my grandfather is into wood working stuff and could help me out.

The varnish or whatever finish will waterproof the wood. The stain is cosmetic. No perfomance enhancement. However it would be a great way to spend some time with your grandfather.

So if I were to get an 'unfinished' stock from Mark, I would be able to 'finish' it myself with my grandfather?

TYE. You said that your grand father works with wood. Why don't you get a piece of wood and both you and your grandfather make one. It would be a lot cheaper and you get quality time together.

I've thought about it.
