Nice story. Great looking does. Results are more satisfying when the labors are hard . . .for some reason. I suppose if we didn't feel this way, then we would be theives instead of hunters.
Excellent job on the tracking! How many yards is a km anyway?

Wow . . .that's a LONG way . . .how many times does your knee cross over your hand during a KM crawl?LondonDave wrote:1 KM (kilometre) = 1000 M (metres). 1 M = just slightly more than 1 yard. 39 inches if I remember correctly.

Congrats on a great day!

Thankfully it wasn't all hands and knees but there was certainly enough of that. Speaking of knees.....mine have never been so sore. They still hurt.sumner4991 wrote:Wow . . .that's a LONG way . . .how many times does your knee cross over your hand during a KM crawl?LondonDave wrote:1 KM (kilometre) = 1000 M (metres). 1 M = just slightly more than 1 yard. 39 inches if I remember correctly.

I just discovered something very interesting.....
I can see the entire area where I was hunting on Google Maps and with the satellite image I can see where I shot the first Doe and where I found her. As the crow flies she was about 400 metres away. The route she took to get there was closer to 600 metres (maybe a little more). The distance we walked searching for her was easily several kilometres.

The morale of the story......Trust your dog! We were so busy concentrating on the blood and hoping she would pick up and track the blood that we forgot that Weimaraners and most sporting breeds are air scenters. She was smelling the deer and we should have realized that.

Been there.Done that.
DON'T TRUST YOUR DOG!!! .....Unless it's been trained to blood track. Otherwise it can just increase your frustration. If it starts travelling in the direction of your downed animal-confirmed by occasional blood signs-and then your dog finds another interesting scent, or sees a rabbit, or a mouse or a squirrel, whatever, you won't know that you are off track. Not until you have tramped till your legs hurt.
In the meantime you may have stomped good sign into oblivion following a dog that wasn't even following a blood trail.
If you bring an untrained dog into a tracking project, it should be done ONLY just before you say "I must have just nicked it. Let's go home."
Congratulations on your hunt, of course!

Awesome story, Dave! Congratulations on the deer-double and the recovery after all the hard work!
I really appreciate all the details posted here - we learn from each other, share in the frustration and celebrate the successes together.
Congrats again!

Here's my experience about using an untrained dog to track a wounded animal.

Hi5....funny story but not. I feel your pain.
I think after Tuesday's adventure I'm going to spend some time and see if I can't properly train at least one of my dogs to blood track. It certainly would be very useful.
