I was very comfortable in the dark...until last year.

I was just baout to climb down from my stand and begin tracking a deer I shot at last light, and it was dark.....real dark. I heard a wolf howl about 100 yards to the north of me, then a response howl about 30 yards to the south.....then the yipping started from every point on the compass. It seemed a pack of timberwolves had found my deer before I could. If you've ever heard a pack of wolves go into a kill frenzy, it's spooky enough...but when they are literally all around you and it's pitch dark, it takes spooky to a whole new level. Nothing like 15-20 150-200 lb dogs in full bloodlust mode to put a little fear into your mind.

The worst part was knowing I had to find the deer just in case it wasn't my deer they were going crazy on. I climbed down with both lights a blazin' and followed the blood trail only to find a decimated carcass and at least 8 pairs of eyes glowing back at me.

Needless to say, that deer wasn't recovered....and the 2 kms back to the quad we the longest 2km's I ever walked.
If you can't set a good example, at least serve as a horrible warning.

Many people have phobias and the fear of the dark is one of the more
common fears. My phobias are of flying and maybe heights. I've had
to fly many thousands of miles and on long international flights.
I don't look forward to it, but once I'm in the air I'm better.

I was told that avoiding my fears would only make them stronger. The
only way to overcome them would be to gradually face them.

Sometime when the moon is full and bright, on a clear night, turn your flashlight off, and safely take a little walk. You need to be careful and know
the terrain. Wait for your eyes to adjust. Just walk or stand there and notice how beautiful
everything is at night and how it is almost the same as day.

Now turn your flashlight back on.......Feel Better !

I carry a light but only use it when I need to see or be seen. I'm a night owl though. My energy levels skyrocket as the day starts to wind down.

Last year we had a lot of coyotes around and I have to admit that although I used to believe they were shy and avoided human contact, I don't believe that anymore so I'm more aware and prepared to use the light when walking out in the dark.

:) As far as hunting goes, I don't see any thing wrong with carrying a small flashlight into the woods to go to your hunting place. There will probably always be lightning flashes, headlight flashes and trail cams going off. It's the smell that alarms game the most I think, not the light or even the noise.

Bugs I know streets I wouldn't walk in the day time, much less at nite, I feel safer in any woods, you'll be OK, just mark your trail going to the stand and go as fast and quiet as you can and settle in, happy hunting

IAMCANADIAN - wicked story....I think I would have run back tomy stand for the night....

At moose camp, we have about 4-5 guys that will not step foot in the bush at dark...they are usually at camp before it gets pitch black.

You're not alone.

No doubt.

If it's after 10:00 PM, I think the model team for Victoria's Secret could do a chorus-line through our bedroom without getting any more attention than April's wrath! :P

After a certain point at night, I am done ... and I can go to sleep in 30 seconds! :D

I got REAL CLOSE to a skunk once. I use a small light now to see my way. I would rather see them, than smell them!

I am 42 and yes still don't enjoy being out there in the dark.Always feel like there is something behind me.
Probably why I always have a spare flashlight in my bag.
