Before the New Xbow Law was passed here in Michigan the DNR, NRC had open meetings regarding the pros and cons of crossbows and at the final Meeting a anti-Xbow opponent said they could be made to shoot 6000 yrds. Being that there are no xbow experts in Michigan, to dispute that a ruling was set to limit the speed to 350 FPS and to appiese the Anti Group.
To me this tread is about that!

Welcome to the forum!
Can't answer you question because I don't know. I can see wanting to know if you were shooting at aerial targets, but I have never tried it with a crossbow. When hunting game such as squirrel I limit my shots to targets on the ground or very low in the tree. I would guess an arrow could travel 200 - 300 yards, but I can't say for sure.

I agree on the "who cares how far aspect". That has nothing to do with humanely and ethically taking ANY kind of game.
Somebody wants to try and take an animal at the farthest distance their "super bow" can shoot, just to say it can be done, well then leave me out of that picture.
That ain't right in my book........

If targets are the goal then the lightest bolt is a good idea if you go with a 200lb plus Excalibur I think the minimum weight arrow you can shoot is 350gr.I checked a little while ago and Bill T says 350 gr are OK for the heavier bows.
Make sure they are bright colors as I am sure you will lose a few past your target getting the thing zeroed in.
Sighting in at 20yds I put one through the shed door, don't tell my wife.
And more importantly play safe and have fun.
Post up some pics when you get going will be cool to see results out that far as I have never shot mine past 50yds.
Again sorry for the skepticism but you never know who's out there and what their agenda is.

How far will an Excalibur shoot ? We tried for maximum range a year ago . We set up in one of my fields after the soybeans were off . We then had someone watch the shooter to set the incline of the crossbow at 45 degrees before shooting .
Maximum distance with my Exocet 200 with a 2216 tipped with a 100 grain fp was about 425 yards .

I consider him and his group experts at long range "TARGET" shooting.
By posting this link I am in NO WAY condoning hunting or shooting at any type of game at these distances. This is for "TARGET SHOOTING ONLY" and I'm sure my Italian friends will tell you the same.
For others browsing this site I believe this thread has a common theme in the answers from our members.
Crossbow "SHOOTING" and crossbow "HUNTING" are two different things entirely and always will be.

quote from saxmans article
If the new crossbow will be used in hunting, our principal parameter of choosing is the arrow kinetic energy, and the second one is the maximum shooting distance. Phoenix allows a kinetic energy, at 30 meters (33 yards), included between 53ftp and 78ftp, it depends principally on arrow mass and string material. With a normal set-up a kinetic energy of 65ftp is possible. This kinetic energy, also using a mechanical broadhead, allows, in a broadside shoot, a complete penetration of a deer, but in case of strong bones you could have only a partial penetration or the arrow could be deviated. 65ftp is the kinetic energy of a normal compound vertical bow of 65 lbs. In case of stronger animal as Russian boars or African wilde animals, this kinetic energy could be sufficent but not suggested. Vortex, and Exocet200 allow a kinetic energy included between 63ftp and 91ftp with an average energy of 76ftp with a normal set-up. This energy allows deep penetrations inside the major part of animals and also in case of big bones, using an appropriate fixed blades with low cutting surface, the penetration is enough to allow at the arrow to arrive inside the chest. The bones deflection will be lower. Equinox and Exomax allow an energy between 70ftp and 103ftp with an average energy of 84ftp. This energy allows very deep penetrations and is enough for strong animals. Last week, a friend of mine has shoot with an Exomax, at 30 meters, a Red Deer, broadside shoot. The shoot, with a 380 grains arrow and a 3 fixed blade low surface broadhead, hitted the deer (200 pounds) in line with the scapula and a little high. The kinetic energy has been enough to break all big bones (including the backbone exactly in the center) and the arrow exited 4" on the other side of the animal. A wrong shoot, thanks to the kinetic energy, allowed a quick kill.
The second parameter to consider is the maximum shooting distance: Phoenix is perfect up to 30 yards; Vortex and Exocet200 up to 50 yards; Equinox and Exomax up to 60 yards with a good set-up.
These are the principal parameters of choice. Some time buying two crossbows, one perfectly tuned only for hunting and another one for pratice, could be a good way to have always a perfect and effective equipment when it is necessary
