Turkey spring time close/ favorite mouth call?
Re: Turkey spring time close/ favorite mouth call?
It's no big deal if you never learn to use a mouth call. I can yelp and cluck with mine and that's about it . Get proficient with a good slate and a box call and you can kill all the turkeys you want. As one of the above posters mentioned, most callers are guilty of calling to much. Less is more, when it comes to turkey calling. Keep practicing and rely on whatever call you master the best.

Re: Turkey spring time close/ favorite mouth call?
I played around with some mouth calls ..found a few I liked but I never realy got what I would call good with them..one tip is to keep it in your mouth all day.. I know guys how will do that so they get so used to them its a natural thing..there are sooo many of them to choose from and most will work..and they are cheap enough to experiment with.
another tip is to store them in Listerine.. I know a guy who had a cold and just could not shake it ,,he finally figured out his mouth call was storing the virus.

I can get all kinds of sounds just not there yet. My brother always kills turkey's. I have videoed him shooting a few times. But I was asking him about the different calls like yelps, cuts, purrs, just all of them. He had no idea what I was talking about. He said man just get out there and listen. He just uses an old slate call and messes around with it and kills them every time. I got apps on my phone, videos, getting the science if it. He was like dude just get out there. My other buddy said best advice I can give you is forget all that stuff you read when you get out there. They have no where to go and all day to get there. I am going to get my limit on turkey and deer this year with my 380. I can already see it. Lol

Never could use a mouth call, I drool too much with them. But I don't think I do too bad with a slate. As you said, hard to work new and hold a bow, but it's all I can do.....RR
My son does a pretty good job with the mouth calls.

Keep at it. It takes a while. Try saying cheeee.... - cheeee-yuck yuck yuck.
Some people find them easier to use because their mouth and tongue are shaped "right" for the calls. I'm not one of them - I need to work at it.
I found that I personally need to cut mine down really small. I also found that they need to sit further back in my mouth than I first felt comfortable with.
Make sure the call is facing the right way - and right side up. The latex (open) end goes forward toward your front teeth. The horseshoe (taped) end goes toward your tonsils. The sounds are produced by air passing the diaphragm/latex so hold it in place on roof of your mouth with the side edges of your tongue. There be sort of a valley in our tongue when you're holding it. Your breath goes out down that valley. Does that make sense?

Re: Turkey spring time close/ favorite mouth call?
I picked up a quakerboy 3 pack and a triple threat call. I like box calls for locating and slate type for getting them close. thats the plan anyway doesn't always work out. go to youtube you should be able to learn alot on there. Remember this turkeys are the worst sounding callers. If it sounds to good its probably a hunter.RonnieM wrote:Trying to learn to learn/use mouth calls. Seems like the only thing I am doing is driving my wife crazy. Do some decent yelps and kee Kees. Then seems to go down hill. I have learned that I tend to better with bigger ones cause I end up trimming them down some then I lose my sound. Gets way to high pitched with air passing around. Anyways, just wondering suggestions on a good one to start out. I know double reed and lots of practice
