9 pointer

Post by patmax »

Congratulations!

Nice buck. I look forward to hearing his weight and age. I'm very impressed with the size of the Northern Whitetail. Our Texas Whitetail are much small bodywise. Our average buck in Central Texas would probably be 100-110 lbs field dressed. In South Texas they get a little bigger but a 200 lb buck is huge even for South Texas. I believe we have 4 different subspecies of Whitetail in the state. I'm not sure if the Northern Whitetail is made up of more than one species or not. The "Huge 10 pointer taken by crossbow" show in another post - is phenominal (both rack and body weight). I also prefer a typical rack. The nontypical being raised by some breeders turn me off.

Good hunting.

That's a beeeee'ute Mike. Just logged on, so not sure what weapon you used on this baby, but obviously it worked. Is that it for 2004 hunting season?

Okay.

First of all, thanks guys! I posted a new picture too.

I have a spot that is a late season yard area. There are many, many deer and many nice bucks (even bigger than this guy). It is a good spot in the fall but it is virtually on fire at the tail end of each season.

Anyway, I was to set up in my climber in my normal spot on the west end of the property in open hardwoods on a generation trail, RJ and Robin were to set up on the east end between the bedding area and hardwoods, adjacent to 2 cut corn fields. I had a shorter walk and I beat them in, but just barely! I jumped a single deer going in, and while setting up my climber I made a hellacious CLANG! I climbed up, hoisted the 'Max up, loaded an arrow and began fighting with my quiver (it was frozen on!) After all this farting around I glanced over to my right and there is literally a train of deer walking by me  at about 60 yards out. 15 in total, I counted them....the two other guys had roosted them off their beds. The deer proceeded out of sight to a nearby green field.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, Robin and Rick were into equally as many deer that I never even got a chance to see!

10 minutes later I saw 4 more deer coming down the same path as the others...I figured for sure they'd just follow the herd and I'd not get a shot. Out of the corner of my eye however, I caught a glimpse of this guy...he was on his own trail on my side of the creek, travelling all alone & walking a different path than the others and heading right for me! The 4 other deer were a doe and three fawns, and luckily they also turned and headed right for me. All 5 deer hung up at 60 yards, testing the air and watching for danger....it was an eternity at 30 feet up waiting for the next move! Anyway, the three fawns finally crossed the creek and walked into my shooting lane, followed by the doe. The buck stood his ground unmoving and watched them walk by me. But now I had a problem. The wind was in my favour for him, but she would soon be in my downwind scent cone and I thought she'd surely blow out. I guess I was plenty high because she never had a clue I was there. This gave him the confidence he needed and he followed them all into my shooting lane. 15 yards, BAHHHH, and the rest is history.

I watched him go and bed down about 100 yards away and he held his head up for about 5 minutes, then turned around, rolled over and crashed his head down.

On another note I will no longer recommend Wasp Boss 100's. This was a deep snowy woods, lung/liver shot, low exit and virtually no blood. The head was BRAND NEW and razor sharp. If it was autumn and he went a ways, it would have been a real tough track. I have now made a few kills with these heads with excellent shot placement and poor, poor blood. They seem to kill very well, but I have had one too many poor blood trails now. I think I'm going to try Muzzy's or maybe Montecs next year.

fyi,

Mike

Very nice buck you got there Red Label. Congrats. I kind of agree with you on the Wasp Boss 100's, they have a small cutting diameter.
