Here is a simple one. http://www.archeryhq.com/kin.htm

Take total arrow weight (ie. 540grains) multiply it by arrow velocity (Feet per second) (ie. 245fps) then multiply it by velocity again. Then divide it by 450,240 (In this example, your Kinetic Energy would be 71.99 foot pounds

This reminds me of one of the questions on my hunting test years ago.
It went like this.

If a .22 has a range of 1 mile, how far will the bullet go if it is fired straight up?

a) one mile
b) two miles
c) zero distance
d) none of the above

After I smugly filled in 'a' as the answer, the correst answer was apparently 'b'. What bureaucrat thought up that stupid question I wanna know.

Pydpiper your on gaurd my friend. Im impressed. way to be diligent.

Welcome Val. you will have such a great time at close target shooting as far as its accuracy is going to be awsome you may not want to shoot long. I know a guy who practices for the fun of it ( Not for HUNTING) at 100 yds and puts them arrows in a pie plate but its about as far down in the scope as he can see to pull that off..
Dedicated.... ta all the sweet Bucks yet ta die!

Last year I brought my son to the range, he had his little recurve and I had my Exocet, a compound guy was asking "how far it could shoot", I told him about the same as his compound. He told me he heard the Excalibur crossbow could shoot over 100 meters. I told him whoever told him that was lying to him. I was a bit frustrated with the beginning of a confrontation in front of my son so I asked him where he heard that, he said "Excalibur.com", and unfortunately he was right. At the time there was a "long range shooting" thread running about Matthias working his stuff. Most of us knew that he had gone through great lengths to modify his bow for long range shooting, but a quick glance at the thread quickly showed that a cross bow was indeed capable of shooting long distances.
I love when guys tinker and modify, especially when it can accomplish something, like long distance shooting, I just don't think a hunting forum is the appropriate place to discuss that particular topic, an anti will come away with one sentence, and that is that the bow is capable of reaching game in distances well over 100 yards. The actual facts seem to get left behind though.
They get:
A crossbow that can shoot 100+ yards is unfair to other bow hunters.
A crossbow that can shoot 100+ yards is unsafe in the woods.
A crossbow that can shoot 100+ yards isn't a bow, it's a gun.
They forget a compound is faster.
They forget a compound can shoot farther.
They will only remember what they want to, and they use it to fight us. Why hand it to them on a plate?
If you are not willing to learn, nobody can help you, if you are willing, nobody can stop you.
A bowhunter with a passion for shooting firearms.

dick195252 wrote:Welcome to the Forum. I would not shoot my Exomax over 30 Yards at a deer. so that is the only Yardage i am cocerned with, at 30 yards i am deadly with my Exomax, allso very confident that i can get a good ethical Kill shot on the animal. This is all my own Personal preferences. But i want to make sure i take the animal down Humanely and with Total respect to the animal.
THese bows are capable of killing an animal much greater than 30 yrds but im in the same boat with dick195252 If that deer is within 30 yrds its going in my freezer, if its 30 yrds + It walks by and sees another day . I then feel I did something wrong for not bringing the deer in shooting range, for example stand locatoin, scent control, calling tactics etc.

I have owned a 175lb Excal Phoenix for 2 weeks and while I can shoot it very accurately from a rested position , I find it difficult to shoot in the offhand position. Yea, I can hit on at 50 when resting the bow but find it very difficult to hold and shoot as I would my rifle.

I have found that I am far more comfortable and accurate shooting my compound bow in the 30 - 50 yard ranges.

I find people get too technical and go too far with this topic. Talking about arrow weight, lenght....on and on

I shoot an Exomax with Excalibur Firebolts and Bolt cutters. This is what comes with Excalibur kits. I also have the scope.

Excalibur suggests you sight in your scope first bar at 10, 20-30-40. Once you get the scope you'll understand.

I Moose hunt and moose are calm animals...you can shoot further at a moose then you should at a deer. I sighted my scope at 20-30-40-50-60, 60 being my last bar on my scope, my furthest shot. I practiced my 60yard shot and can hit a 4 inch diameter...Perfect for moose. I tried shooting 70 yards and the arrow went wild. I might of shot bad, but 70yards is 210ft, that's FAR and I didn't want to wreck an arrow in the ground.

Now, people talk about deer jumping the string. I know deer jump, I seen it and every deer I shot "jumped", but was dead not far away. We know they jump but know that they also got hit. To think a deer will jump and your arrow will miss or hit 12 inches below...be realistic. Even if you take a 60yard shot, that's only 180ft. My crossbow shoots 350ft/second. My arrow reaches 180ft in half a second!! So do Deer move faster than the speed of light? 1/2 a second is a guaranteed shot. Allot of times hunters get excited and make a bad shot, get to the dead animal and blame the deer for jumping....when in other cases the deer jumps runs off with both lungs collapse...

Deer jump to "twacks" and loud sounds. But 1/2 a second at 60yards is not to be worried about. If you rather shoot 30yards, when it's like 1/4 second...think about it...

As for Excalibur, you will not regret the purchase...it's by far the best out there. A little bulky and almost impossible to walk with, but in a stand or at your spot, it's as good as a rifle.
