I "might" be able to make it, provided they'll let me across the border. What all is required now to cross over AND get back?

I've got a bunch of time at work I need to burn, and will have even more by the time August rolls around. Might as well take the time doing something I want to do. Gas will probably be a pretty good hit, but that'll probably be about the only expense I'll have.

Agingcrossbower, depending upon if I go or not, you'd be more than welcome to hitch a ride. It would be a little out of the way for me, but not too much.

Big Cal,

From the customs site, Have proper ID
When you enter Canada, a border services officer may ask to see your passport and a valid visa (if you are arriving from a country from which one is required). If you are a United States (U.S.) citizen, you do not need a passport to enter Canada; however, you should carry proof of your citizenship such as a birth certificate, a certificate of citizenship or naturalization or a Certificate of Indian Status, as well as a photo ID. If you are a permanent resident of the U.S., you must bring your permanent resident card with you.

I cant find enough information about bringing a bow. They have plenty on guns but nothing on Crossbows. You do not need a license to buy a crossbow here and it falls under the bow category for hunting purposes yet by police regulations it is also considered a firearm. So I could call customs if bringing one with you.
To be a vegetarian is to listen to the live carrot gradually screaming as it drowns in a pot of boiling water …. Which is more ethical to you ??

I must be missing something. I am 62, born and raised in the USA. What the heck is a "Permanent resident card"? They must have forgot to issue me one.

Since June 2009, everyone from every country arriving in Canada by air, land and sea has needed a passport or equivalent travel document.

The change in passport requirements for travel to Canada from the U.S. has sent plenty of people off to apply for their passports.

However, several other valid travel documents denote identity and citizenship and thereby act as substitutes for a passport for entry into Canada for U.S. citizens. 1.NEXUS Card: A partnership between the Canada and U.S. border services that pre-approves entry for travellers by land, sea or air between Canada and U.S. An added benefit is designated and faster lanes at border crossings and airports. Application process involves interview and fingerprinting. Both U.S. and Canadian citizens apply through U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
2.U.S. Passport Card: This U.S. Department of State-issued ID is valid for entry into Canada by land or sea, though not valid for international air travel.
3.Enhanced Driver's License (EDL): EDLs indicate both citizenship and identity. Valid for entry into Canada by land or sea, though not valid for international air travel. As of January 2009, only available in Washington and New York states, but coming to Vermont. See individual state licensing departments for more info.
4.FAST/Expres card: This U.S. Customs and Border Protection program pre-approves commercial truck drivers for travel between the U.S. and Canada.

Scott, two things.
First you sound like you've been talking to too many bureaucrats
Second, are you coming? You could hitch a ride in Kentucky and meet up with Aging in Penciltuckey.

I actually just did a copy and paste on the information I posted. I'd hate for anyone to get to the boarder and have to turn back.

I did apply for a passport last week. So, I'll be a step closer to making the crossing. I think they changed the crossing requirements the year after I was there . . .immediately after they found out about midnight archery.

It really doesn't look good for me to make it this year. My oldest daughter starts college this Fall and I'll probably have my hands full getting ready to move her to Tennessee.

I'm not ruling the trip out, but, the odds are not real good.

My tip for anyone going to Canada from the U.S. BYOB

If you require anything that is subject to the Sin Tax in Canada, then you should bring those items with you.

As a non-canadian living in Canada I need a permanent resident card. You guys in the US don't need to worry about those. :D

Norm . . .for the price, I'll drink 6 U.S. beers instead of one Canadian. You have a OK arguement on the beer, however, it's still not worth the $$ . . .at least not for me.

Boo . . .yeah, up there, the sticker price of a bottle of Jack would just about cover the cost of my wedding. I can still remember the crossing guard asking, "that's all you have?" . . .the tone of his voice was the kicker . . .he did everything but say, "turn this car around and load it up before crossing, FOOLS!!". He's probably still laughing about sending us in with a low stash of beer.
