Just got the matrix 380 and plan on turkey hunting with it. I am torn on the best broadhead to use with them. Trying to figure out one that will not pas through.

When does your season start? I would like to find out what you end up going with and if you had success? I have been cruising the forums looking for recommendations. The consensus seems to be accuracy first, so whatever you shoot well with. Still I would like to see what other people use. At this point I have 125grain Muzzy broad heads, not sure that's what I want to use.

Starts here April 12th. Trying to go with a fixed head, like the g5 striker, but the mech blades have a heck of a cutting diameter on them. Just trying to find something that will be accurate 1st then hoping no travel through. Not sure yet but I am like a little boy before Christmas thinking about it.

I've been busy as heck as my company got sold, but I am crunching through over 500 data points of deer kill data looking at kind of BH, and where the deer was hit etc, versus how far it travelled after the shot. I hope to somehow get it out to people when it's done but basically it will show that BH type really does not matter. Put it in the right place and a deer goes about 60yards.

So given that I go for accuracy and structural integrity

Won't happen. I used to shoot an Emax, Slicks w/ Zwickey Grappler, blew right thru them. I went to an Exocet and they stayed in the bird.

I had a 380 for a short while.

Based on what I have read, due to the characteristics of broad heads they are less accurate then mechanicals. Is that still the case or have the new ones improved? That is also assuming the mechanical doesn't open in flight.

I will post a study I read with vertical bows and crossbows. It's was done only on deer with kills found using mech and fixed blades. Mech blades had higher found kill rates but it's an older study. It surprised me

Nice article. I have some recovery data but I'm not sure how good it is. It shows a recovery rate of over 96%, so this does not line up with rifle data or the data from the article. The data I have will be useful for recovery distance.

My initial thought on the article as to why mechs have a very slightly higher recovery rate is that a fixed blade head will magnify any arrow imperfections, and in some cases can cause very erratic flight even at 20yds. And if an archer is not willing to put in the extra time to check every arrow to make sure they all fly as expected, you could get some "less than desireable" hits. The data I have shows that BH type and even cutting dia do not effect distance travelled after the shot.

Good stuff!!

Big John is building my arrows for these heads now. Not sure about total weight yet but it may be on the heavy side. Not worried because the matrix 355 should push it no problem...

The NAP FOC 170 gr. two blade really impressed me on the two decent 8 points I took during the 13 season. The blades are .040 thick and they did not even bend after slicing through ribs.
I shot them on 18" Black Eagle Zombies with 25 grain aluminum front inserts, Lumenoks out back, Blazers at a total weight of 400 grains.
