Re: New crossbow stock(NOT FIREARM) curves and dips(UPDATED)
My first time using the new finish with the stock stained and found out it does not work very well so I am going to sand it down and do it over. Just did not turn out right. OH, WELL.

Re: New crossbow stock(NOT FIREARM) curves and dips(UPDATED)
Thanks Stan. I want to mention that Gary M. lent a hand on this by sending me some one eighth inch brass rods. I put one on either side of the cocking catch. Gives it super strength greater than the mere human.
I can not see it breaking. Oddly a crack appeared on both sides right in the rope cocking groove. Must be something to do with the exetreme Quilted grain. That grain goes everywhere. With that type of grain it is hard to tell exactly where the strength is and where its weak. The pins will take care of that problem. Thanks Gary. Its a great idea.

I wondered about that area..on mine i worked hard to get the rail to butt tight against it thinking it will be stronger ..but after a few sesions of shooting i can see a gap ..i think it crept foward much like the riser joint does.agingcrossbower wrote:Thanks Stan. that brass rod idea is a good one..can you show any detail pics of that ? if i am understanding you put them vertical on eitherside of the groove and caped it off with a darker wood?
what realy caught my eye is how perfect the buttplate is joined to the stock. thats a tough joint to get right..fine job

Here you go Strum. I didn't trust the wood with the cocking rope so I drilled the stock and epoxied in the brass pins. The pins are 1 3/4" long. Mike made a little walnut cap that covers the pins on his stock. Gary

The stock looks great aging. I like the lighter colour better. Gary the brass pins are a great idea, the direction of the grain in that area does not offer much strength. The little brass "dots" are a nice accent against the dark wood.

The owner has it and he loves it. Thats all that matters. And, I mailed it on FRIDAY and he got it TODAY. Must be some sort of record. The owner hinted he may just display it instead of hunting in Africa with it. All is good.

You know, it sounds crazy but if a person I built a stock for would tell me he hated it, I think I would refund any money he gave me and pay to get it back. I would be totally crushed. Thats one thing that could stop me from making more for a long time. Customer thoughts and approval is everything. You know that almost two months with that piece of wood. It is a sentimental thing. I'm sure Darrel can relate.
