22" Bolts

Post by TYE »

Do any of you guys shoot 22" bolts? A guy I know who deals Horton's said he shoots 22" bolts and said they work great.

What difference would the extra 2" of the 22" bolts make? rather than a 20" bolt.

I used to shoot 22" 2117 bolts from my first Wolverine, at the time thats all that was around for a while at Gagnons sports, it was that or 16" Barrnett type bolts.

I'm just wondering if the bolt would fly any better. I think he said they fly flatter. Less drop or something. He uses 22" Easton XX75 2219 Aluminums with 125gr Satelitte broadheads.

Don't have the money to just try it. I was just curious.

Think I'm gonna get some 20" Beman Thunderbolts or some 20" Gold Tip Laser 2's.

Some people rather than adding weight to thier carbons are just adding length to gain the extra weight. The extra length does help some broadheads to fly much better. A co-worker of mine could not get his broadheads to fly out of his 200Lb Horton and refused to use mechanical broadheads due to a bad experience. Since he makes his own arrows I suggested he try 22" arrows to see if it helped to stablize his set up better.
He told me he went from 8" to 12" groups at 25 yards to shooting 6" groups at the same distance with the 22" arrows.

Okay so I guess he wasn't yankin' my chain after.

Right now I'm shooting Easton XX75 2219's with 100gr tips in a 3 inch circle.

I hope the Carbons will fly the same.

In my opinion, for what it's worth, I think that the length of the bolt one can use depends on the length of the rail. IOW, for a Vixen/Phoenix a 18" bolt would be just the ticket, whereas for an Exocet a 20" bolt would be more appropriate, and for an Exomag/Exomax a 22" bolt might be better.

I guess I should stick with 20". If it works, why fix it?

I started shooting shoot 22" bolts out of my carved limb Exocet this year because they were recommended to me by a competive crossbow shooter and hunter. The advantages are supposed to be for the same reasons Buckeye mentioned. However, I've never done any testing to verify this. All I know is that they work fine for me. The long bolts combined with a brass insert and Quickspin vanes completely solved my broadhead accuracy problem.
