Crossbow for Manitoba spring bear hunting???

Post by GonHuntin »

Got a call this evening from a good friend, a mutual acquaintance is putting together a black bear hunt in Manitoba next spring and they have one more opening. Since I have always wanted to take a bear, I'm inclined to go, but I have questions. Most of the group going on the trip will be bow hunting, since I can't shoot a conventional bow, I need to know if I can use my Exocet???

I don't know details about dates (June sometime) or units or even the outfitter yet, but I need to get the crossbow legality issue out of the way before I decide whether to go.

My Manitoba 2005 hunting guide said that the black bear season for 2006 starts Apr. 24 and then again Aug.28.The spring hunt is around 2 months long, and the fall hunt just over one mouth. For a resident hunter it costs $30.00 non-resident$100.00.There are some areas that are bow only, just east of Winnipeg. If you are hunting in a rifle season you can use a x-bow with a draw weight no less than 150 puonds with a point 7/8 in. or wider.
hope that helps. We had one guy killed by a bear this year and a guy and his dog attacked.I have seen bears all summer.Around Winnipeg as well as to the east and north, within one hours drive of the city.Come on out, shoot some, they hang around to much,to close for the little kids to play at the cottage.

As usual, Digger is very helpfull.

However, he may have created the impression that a Xbow can only be used during deer hunting season.

The regs allow use of a Xbow during muzzleloader deer season AND big game rifle seasons.

The spring bear season is big game centerfire rifle season.

I suggest you contact the outfitter and get references. Be sure to check them out. I wouldn't expect many people who merely share Manitoba residency would have first hand knowledge of the outfitters.
