Blind deer

Post by wildwindom »

Went to go out hunting last sunday and seen this guy takeing pics of this deer. So i stoped to check it out and come to find out she was blind. Her eyes were all swelled up and full of puss and all white. So i took her out felt really bad for her. Called the dnr and they came and picked her up. Any one else see this before

Never seen that before. Are you going to check back with DNR to see what they find?

No idea! She looks to be in good condition otherwise, so it must be a recent development. Is the DNR going to let you know what was wrong? It would be interesting to know!

He said they see it alot in bucks when they fight and poke each other in the eyes and once one gets infected it spreads to the other one. He said she could have been eating or running thrue the woods and poked something in her eye. I asked him what he was going to do with it and he told me he was gonna dump it in a wildlife refuge and let nature take care of it.

Wabi you would not believe how good she looked fat and healthy. So it had to be pretty recent cause she had to be eating.

Blind Deer

Post by BOB VANDRISH »

I had a very similar experience in PA a few years ago, where I was able to get within 15 yards of a deer, and it looked as if she could not see me.
I know that she did not get wind of me,and she eventually just walked off without realizing I was there.
I did not see anything wrong with her eyes, but I was convinced she had less than normal eyesight.
She looked in good shape too,so maybe she was able to see enough to eat.

"if she did suffer damage from running through the bush, its strange that she damaged both eyes and not just one."

Also funny how she is looking straight at the camera. Damn her other senses are sharp.

What about pinkeye. We have cows that get it all the time . I beleive it can be spread by flies. Do you think that is possible ?
I know this is the wrong time of year to have a lot of flies, but does take some time to really get the eyes full of puss.
Just a thought.

Yes they were when i walked up to her she was just walking in circles but as soon as she heard me she stoped and her ears went right to me. But she did not see me she just stood there i was 10 yards from her when i shot.
