Climbing stand ?

Post by Carnivorous »

Happy new year all!

I am a new owner of an exocett 200. I have a done all my Deer hunting with Rifles in the past (WMU 84) & finally made the move to a x-bow for more of a challenge & hopefully an extended season down here in the Banana belt(WMU 94). Any how I am looking @ those climbing stands. The one I may buy is the Strong built Comanche. I am wondering if anyone out their is using this stand & how is it working for them. The weight of this stand is a bit heavy @ 33lbs but I am young & should be able to handle that. Any info would be appreciated.

climbing tree stands

Post by Old Kid »

hi brxbowhunter, I've been using a strongbuilt comanche climbing stand all this "past " season, and I love it .With practice it's easy to set up and take down.I did customize a few things on it to make it more "old kid" friendly but thats another story. If you've got some nice sized (10in.d.or more)with fairly straight ,clear trunks where you want to hunt then a climber is the way to go.I'm 57 years old with a bum knee, but the stand weight doesn't even slow me down.In one location I have used 5 different trees within a 50 yd. diameter to fine tune to the deer's travel patterns.Oh yeh ,it got me a few deer in the freezer too. :D :D :D

Happy New Year and good luck,
Old kid

bell, for what it is worth, here are my impressions of the API Grandslam Extreme.

It weighs in at 21lbs. It is very stable. It uses chains which some have said are noisey but they are rubber coated and I found the stand to be quite quiet. The comanche had a better packing setup but the API was easier to attach to the tree in the dark due to the way the holes line up on the cable/chain. The comanche design allows you to stand it up on the ground while the API would have to be laid flat or leaned up against a tree. The API comes with a nice waterproof bag to cary stuff. That is where I kept my folding saw and clippers. Old kid will back me up in saying the comanche had noisey pads around the shooting rail. I know he replaced his witha quieter material. The commmanche on the other hand is much better priced.

Hope this little bit of info helps. I know all the stands have their good and bad points. The choice is up to you. Summit makes some great looking stands also. Regardless of the stand you get, I would recommend the SUmmit Quick CLimb stirrups. Before I invested the 17 dollars on these things, I had to bend down in the stand and slide the straps over my feet. With the stirrups, I just had to stand up, turn around and slip my feet into them. No fighting to get the straps over your boots in the cold 25 feet off the ground. I know old kid rigged up some straps that basically do the same. I doubt his winter boots would have fit into the stirrups. They are bigger than the ones Neil Armstrong wore on t he moon  No wonder he has a bum knee  His stand did produce alot more deer than mine, so it must be the stand and not the hunter, right?

Yes I live just outside Belleriver Ontario. I am looking forward to using the Exocett for Turkey in the Spring. I have found I usually have only one day to Hunt which is Sunday this works out having a bow now. We have alot of Deer down here & it is Archery only so a Crossbow was a natural choice for me. I ordered the Strong built comanche from BPS. It's on sale for $79.00 US. I will also be using my Ameristep outhouse ground blind.
