Two good links here. I purchased a kit today. Came with the plaque, harware and brass name plate. Got the borax (boric acid) from the grocery store. I'm starting the preserving after lunch.

The kits work fine, however the way I did mine was to pull all tail feathers from the butt (no meat left at all) and rearrange them on a board/cardboard. Then take automotive bondo and lay a thin layer at the base of the feathers. The advantages to this are: you can align your feathers perfectly, it is permanent and won't rot, don't have to wait for the tail to cure.

I salted my tail last year. Salted heavily with the fan spread out and pins holding the feathers back. We have done this with grouse tails and they do not breaksdown so it should be find. I then headed over to Micheals craft store to get a nice looking piece of wood to mount and another to cover the meat of the tail. Stained everything the same dark colour and done. Had a brass plate made up at an engraving shop in the mall for a few bucks. Good luck.
