DRY FIRED!!!

Post by jrt »

Hi guys! First poster here and already with a bad news - I dry fired my brand new Phoenix and now it has a four-inch long and about 2/8" wide splinter on the upper part of the left limb. The two lower part of the string loops also jumped out of their recesses. I am still in shock as I type this and would like to know what my next action should be? TIA

On closer inspection the splinter is not even 1/8" thick. I hope that´s good news. I tried puting the loops back but the Stringing Aid holes were not big enough to let the derailed string loops to pass through. I won´t force myself enough to do the unaided leaning technique as per video - I don´t have safety glasses on hand. It is almost 7 p.m. here in Vienna, Austria so the shop has closed already. Thanks guys.

Just call or email excalibur factory and tell the truth.
You can even buy a pair of limbs from www.archersnook.com to replace the damaged limb by yourself. As your crossbow is new you will not have the necessity to replace both the limbs (both of them should be on the same poundage).

It happens before with a friend of mine, one exocet 200, and the limbs splintered too. It NEED to be replaced, please, don't try to shoot your crossbow without replace the limbs, ok?
I'm all for gun control. To me, gun control is putting 2 bullets in the same hole... UNCLE TED

Does anyone know how much this one-time lesson will cost me? How much do the limbs cost? I think I need to replace both since the string loop recesses have chipped off also. And what string do I have? ^

I would definately not try to use those limbs! Contact Excalibur customer service and tell them what happened, I'm sure they will be able to help you get your Phoenix shooting again.

I did the same thing, only a smaller splinter. After a while another larger splinter started to develop, I emailed excalibur with photos and said what I had done. They helped me out big time, Excalibur is second to none when it comes to back up service.
Email Excalibur marketing dude with close up photos and tell him what you have done, Im sure you will be looked after.
I know how devistated you feel with your dry fire, its so easy to do when you are concentrating on shooting tachnique, foot placement and breathing, trigger pull etc that not putting a bolt in can sometimes happen. any way a good lesson to be learnt, learn by your mistakes  .
If it feels good, DO IT.

“Smarter people learn from other peoples´ mistakes while fools learn from their own mistakes.” I hope someone would be smarter than me so allow me to share some lessons learned: I was beginning to find my small arms hobby getting expensive so I have decided on a crossbow as an alternative because I could practice at home without the range fee(around here about US $16/hour) plus ammo. Never even handled a crossbow before in my life so I surfed the net and gleaned from the experiences of shooters all over the world. One thing I have found and concluded – Excalibur crossbows are the best in all thinkable category bar none. I´ve even found from a german distributor (Wolfszeit) the €5000(around US$ 6093) challenge that nothing will outshoot Excalibur crossbows precision-wise! Luckily there is a Wolfszeit distributor here in Austria also so I drove there. I decided on the Phoenix since I prefer the camo but the Wolfszeit description on their website that the Vixen is the best SHTF TEOTWAWKI survival crossbow (now I know the why) out there kept it still on the running. Explaining to the proprietor that I may shoot 3D with it also he advised me to get the Phoenix for a flatter trajectory. The Phoenix was already set up with the Vari-zone scope but I decided against it so that I could have the Rinehart target cube instead, having planned not to spend more than €700(~US$ 852). First mistake since I found out a few minutes later that I was having 2-inch groups rested out to about 30yards with the first time ever unfamiliar fiber optic sight. I reckon with the scope I could do one-holers at the same distance. By the way the proprietor was doing one-holers standing offhand at ~15yards with the FO sight! I don´t like attracting attention if I don´t need to and that was another mistake when I didn´t get the carrying case. Back home I set up my target about 9yards away and started my shooting sessions. New found love! Then the groups started not being consistent. I got puzzled by this until the front sight literally dropped from the dovetail. Blue Loc-tite: mistake corrected. Then I developed a flinch. Precised cocking, consistent hold, sight picture, front sight focus, surprise break, enough oxygen to the brain – all checked OK, follow through…eureka! I was blinking during release! Indoor shooting magnified the noise that eventually produced the blinking which led to the flinch. Took out my shooting ear muffs and busted the myth that I was starting to believe that maybe the bolts needed farther distance to stabilize to shoot consistently. I was getting bored of the one-holers that I was getting that I increased the pace simulating horde of attacks ala Lord of the Ring to bring factors like friction, heat and fatigue into the picture. The bolts needed only one same bolt hole on the target. All this while the TV and my computer are on (another mistake) then it happened – TWANGGG! That one last shot felt different than previous ones! Did I have a pass-thru since I didn´t see the bolt sticking out? DRY FIRED!!! The rest you all know. Now the shop opens at 9AM (they are close Mondays) and I will call and see. P.S. – The thought that I should have bought the Vixen instead because it has a better chance of surviving the torture I subjected my Phoenix to has crossed my mind not only once. But the lessons I learned prepared me even for an EXOMAX except maybe the cocking ease and the reasoning to justify another buy to the missus!

jrt,

One dry-fire? Heck, I'm up to three now, ALL at the range. No damage done. Yet. As said, talk to the Excalibur folks and take it from there.
Whatever happens, It'll be OK.
