Making a fishing arrow

Post by Farmer »

Took the advice from Evan and made my fish arrow for my Exocet 200. Bought a few new fishing arrows from a local dealer ( He had a pile of Fred bear Kits ) The glass fish arrow fit perfectly inside a 2215 shaft the dealer gave me.
Took afew pictures while I put it together. It looks pretty sweet. Sure is a heavy shaft. The aluminum arrow is 24 inches long and the fibergalss shaft is 8/10ths of an inch longer. the fish point had an out sert that now buts up against the aluminim shaft. It sure makes for a heavy shaft.

If any one wants to see a few pictures I can have my son post them later.

Will work on the bracket for the reel next.

I tried a Zwickey Scorpio on the 24" arrows with the Exocet Lite today, it worked great (the Scorpio is in front of the AMS safety slide). My oldest son Jon shot a carp with the Vixen Lite, and I shot a nice smallmouth buff with the Exocet Lite.

Sorry guys that fish I caught was a bigmouth buff (first one I've ever seen), not a smallmouth.

That is a good sized carp. They are just starting to splash around here. Have seen a few gar pike cruising around as well.

With luck there will be time to try my new fish arrow this week. :D

Farmer,

Here's a good bowfishing article that has a pic of the AMS safety slide and stop on a fiberglass arrow. It works the same on an aluminum/fiberglass crossbow arrow.

I would be willing to take some pics for you but my digital camera doesn't take closeups very well. They would be fuzzy and you wouldn't be able to see the detail. (It's a cheap camera I bought used.)

1st ---picture is just to check the fit between the 2 shafts

2nd ---picture is cutting the fiberglass fish arrow to length

3rd ---picture is the pre fit before putting the epoxy on the fibreglass shaft

4th--- picture is the amount that had to hang out from the aluminum shaft

so it would fit flush to the aluminum shaft

Farmer, it looks to me like there should be about twice that much of the fiberglass shaft protruding from the aluminum shaft. See the small hole near the back of the point at the top (in the last picture)? That hole is where you can drill a hole through the fiberglass shaft to insert a safety wire to make sure the point doesn't fall off if you get a really big one and the epoxy bond fails. I don't use a safety wire, I have never had a problem with point pull-offs, but the fiberglass shaft should slide down the back of the point well past that hole. With the small amount of fiberglass shaft protruding out of your aluminum shaft it doesn't look like the fiberglass shaft even reaches this hole when the point is installed.
