Is a Whitetail a Whitetail?

Post by BUCKSHOT »

Well yes!
I thought it would be neat to look into how many subspecies of Whitetail there are! I knew from the readings on here and in some magazines how the Deer vary mostly in size from here to there!
I didn't realize there were so many subspecies, !7 in all according to this site I was checking out!

The number one subspecies are The Virginia Whitetail
#2 The Northern Whitetail
#3 The Dakota Whitetail
#4 The Northwest Whitetail
#5 The Columbian Whitetail
#6 The Cous, or Arizona Whitetail
#7 The Texas Whitetail
#8 The Carmen Mountains Whitetail
#9 The Avery Island Whitetail
#10 The Kansas Whitetail
#11 The Bull's Island Whitetail
#12 The Hunting Island Whitetail
#13 The Hilton Head Island Whitetail
#14 The Blackbeard Island Whitetail
#15 The Florida Whitetail
#16 The Florida Coastal Whitetail
#17 The Florida Key Whitetail

There is some interesting information on each subspecies regarding there size, specific habitat, population and ranking on the endangered species list for some!
Just thought it would be cool to shed some light on the number of species and the reason why they vary so from area to area, being that they are cousins, not all a Deer is a Deer!

After reading that Buckshot, Makes me want to go back and vist my mum in Conn. I remember how big the bucks are back there. Here in south AZ. they look about the size of a fawn of a Northern Buck. Going back in September for a stay then over to Austraila to get married. Thanks for the info 8)

That's pretty interesting.

I knew there were different species but didn't think there was 17, let alone 38.

Well, you never stop learning!..
