Took the Phoenix squirrel hunting this evening.

Post by wabi »

Decided to try to to see if I could get a squirrel at the feeder this evening, so I strung the Phoenix and headed out. When I got there I checked the feeder and it was empty. I put the Phoenix down and started to lower the feeder when I happened to notice a couple fawns heading for the food plot. I grabbed the camera and hunkered down beside the feeder. They gave me several good shots. This one is at about 15 feet!

After they left I filled the feeder and climbed up in my new ladder stand. I hauled the Phoenix up, and sat back to see if a squirrel would show. I had only been there a minute or two when I noticed movement in the field next to the food plot.

Here came three small bucks to munch on the clover, soy beans, and turnip salad bar. I got several pics, but won't try to post too many. Here's two of them at around 30 yards.

Not great racks, but I'd take the meat any day!

The closest one came was about 20 yards. Of course I never did see a squirrel, but I felt like it was a pretty good evening anyway. When I was ready to come home I did shoot the HTM blunt tipped arrow I had loaded at a small leaf where the one buck was when he was closest. Of course I nailed the leaf to the ground! Just hope I can shoot that well when the target is wearing hair in a few more weeks!

Sure look's like that plot was worth the effort. If you had my luck once deer season open's all you'll see is squirrels!

lynnbo,
I am lucky to have the place. I do a lot to help out the landowner and he pretty well lets me do as I please - he even helps with the plots as he hunts, too.

Bob,
All those actually came in before I got settled in and lit a vanilla cigar. Didn't even have coffee brewing!!!!

R.J.
That's the main plot and has been there for about 4 years now with a feeder in operation almost year-round. It will draw does & fawns daily, but the bucks become too wary to enter during daylight after season gets going strong. This year I added a couple more smaller plots, and have seen a much better buck in one of those. Last year there was a huge scrape at the one tree in the middle of the small opening where I made the plot. I don't plan to hunt it hard until they stare scraping, then I'll spend a lot of evenings there (unless I get a buck before then).

warpipe,
If you see me posting pictures of crossbow killed squirrels after deer season opens you'll know my luck's about the same!

Looking good Wabi, too bad no squirrel, but deer season is looking good for you. I still need to dust off all my equipment and get ready for the season. I might even get one with that muzzleloader this year.
