Grizzly Bear encounter

Post by Ridge Runner »

Well i got back from my hunting trip last monday. We saw a nice two point mule deer, passed up. ran into three cow elk. No open season. The quad trails were dry and dusty. The temp during the day was 30 plus. We found a nice cool area with a creek running down the middle of the draw. set up for some bugling and cow talk . Five minutes later a big grizzly bear showed up. His head was the size of a garbage can lid. A silver and white colour face. We try to leave the area but he pinned us against a stand of trees. Those crossbow where the only fire power we had on us. We started yelling at him, he turned and ran into the tall trees behind him. This was our chance to run for it. Ten minutes later we got to the quads. Hit the trail and back to camp. That was the last day of the hunt. Well it was close  and a lesson well learned.Next bow hunt we will be packing back up 12 gauge. That bear stopped 30 yds from us. My hunting buddy and I are happy to be here. What a hunt....Chow

Would pepper spray be a better alternative, or is it legal to shoot them there?

I would think it's legal to shot a bear anywhere if your life is in danger. I would rather face a judge then a grizzley bear. (most days  )

I've heard of slugs bouncing off the skulls of a grizzley bears so I guess luck is important if they are running straight at you.

I'd definitely have a backup slug gun. Glad you're okay.

I don't hunt in any areas where bears are even present, but I think I would carry the pepper spray if I did. Not saying I wouldn't have some firepower to back that up, though.

Ridge Runner I know how you feel. About 4 years ago when I was hunting at near Prince George when I had a grizzly bear charge me. That is one experience I will never forget, glad that everything worked out fine.

Just curious... what's the effective range of the pepper spray? I think I'd rather stop him at 20 yds with the slug gun rather than tick him off at 10 ft with the pepper spray. Just my two cents
