POI in a tree stand

Post by Bobber54 »

I practiced with my Phoenix on the ground at various yardages. I am now 15' up in a tree. It dawned on me that my POI might different being up higher. I should have thought that sooner, but I didn't. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this that would help me out, without bringing my stand home any finding out by shooting
Thanks;
Bob

I just read a good article about this subject. The author stated that you need to aim for the distance from your tree to the target ( horizontal distance), and not the slant range from your tree stand height. I've only shot from the ground, but I'll be hunting next week from the same height as you, and I'll probably fire one off at my decoy just to see for my self.

I'm confused now. I better climb into my little boy's tree house a fire a few shots off. Nothing beats practice.

Hi I sight my bow from the roof of my house and that shows the different impact point and path of the bolt. It does make a difference. Hope you don't have a steep tin roof.

from what i believe it would be simple math... the distance will be greater shooting from a stand so really when u step out 10 yards it might be 15 yards so that being said i would think that the arrow would hit low?? just wat i think

Thanks for replying. I use the varizone scope and a rangefinder, so I may have to get in a tree and try it, just to reassure myself.

Thats your best bet Bobber. Nothing is better than first hand experience.

Yes, I've heard of Chuck Adams. He's quite a hunter. It would be nice to have the abundant hunting opportunities he has.

That's a good article from Chuck adams. I shot my Phoenix at a target that was 17 yds slant range from a 15' high tree house. I didn't notice any big change in the POI. That was aiming dead center with my 20 yd sight.

I normally pace off the distance from my tree stand out to various landmarks. I bought a Nikon Rangefinder and have been using it too now. It seems to be very acurate.

on the ground you shoot and you have a arch in the trajectory because of gravity..
In the tree say 20ft up shooting down you are not fighting gravity as much so yes the inpact would be high if you aimed for the same point..so yes you must aim low..and like Bstout said it applies to shooting at an upward angle also to the same degree..

It comes down to practice from the same angle that choose to hunt from..( on the ground or in a tree) on a roof, from a 2nd story deck whatever...

I sight in my 200 lb exomag on the ground first at 20 -30 -40 with my varizone set on 325. Then and I have practiced from up in my tree at 20 ft....I turn my varizon up to 350 and in a tree 2o ft up with my arrow combination Im right on the money..

Now saying that ---I will blow your mind here...what if the deer is right below your stand striaght down shot...You must hold (if you have a varizon) the 40yd mk on him to be dead on...why... because the scope is mounted so high on the xbow...it takes some distance out to allow the scope to be on..If you put the 20yd crosshair on the deer it will hit way low..Idealy wait till the deer gets out away from you a bit and take a better shot than straight down..

After all the time money and effort you go thru to get yourself to the woods and in a situation to take a shot...dont forget that last most important thing..PRACTICE...
Dedicated.... ta all the sweet Bucks yet ta die!
