What is that powder used to see air currents???

Post by DrDan »

Dang it I saw it somewhere. It was little squeeze bottles that blow out a powder that will show the least little air current. I need to get some for coyote season. I see Cabela's sells some containers with some kind of fluff in them, but I think the powder may be better.

I have found milk weed pods in my area. They work great. I pull the seed off the fluff and just let go off the fluff while on the stand. Really light winds will be detected by this. You can't change the wind, but it will give you an idea on where to concentrate looking for deer to come from.

ecoaster: Easy one! Buy a box of cornstarch or baby powder. Pry off the top of one of the nose spray plastic bottles, rinse and dry it out . Fill it with the baby powder and voila you have enough wind indicator for the whole season. It really works. Striper

In each of my stands I hang a about a 12 in length of dental floss from a limb. It moves with the slightest breeze showing the air currents.

For a powder i would think flour or unscented talcum powder would do the trick.

Great idea striper. How about some Gold Bond. I'm sure some of the more senior fellas here have a good supply of that  .

I use chalk line powder. Comes in all kinds of colors. I use one of those nose spray bottles striper mentioned and fill as needed.

Now all I gotta do is find a nose sprayer bottle - got chalk, but "rarely" ever use medicine.

I did that before it got popular. 20 years ago. I just took an old sqeeze bottle like you say. I dont remember what I used but it was from the Wifes spam. Either baking powder or Baking soda. And you probably already have it. Which ever was finer.Hope that helps

I use milkweed. You can see more than wind direction with them. You can also see thermals. Watch them as they move through the air, they will often change direction. They are free. They are already in the deer's home so they won't offend.
