First xbow deer

Post by groundpounder »

Got my first xbow deer and its a good one! Three deer came running by me while I was sitting on the ground and stopped about 100 yards out. I grunted three times and this buck started coming back to me. Never saw what the other two were but guessing he was already running some does. He came up to about 25 yards then turned and started walking broadside. When he got in a shooting lane I let a bolt fly. He did that stagger run right into some vines and it flipped him over. He got back up and ran back into the path he came up about 35 yards out and stopped looking my way but with a tree between us. I cocked the bow again and he started peering around the tree at me while I was reaching for another bolt. I froze and waited while he got wobbly knees and laid down. I put another bolt in and he got up and ran another 20 yards to the side and laid down again this time with his back to me but head still up. I went ahead and sent another bolt flying and it too hit its mark. He ran about 20 more yards and piled up. It is now gun season here in Georgia but the land owner here only wants us using archery equipment. I'm good with that!

Great story along with a great deer. I am new to crossbow hunting and it has opened several places for me to hunt that I could never get permission to gun hunt. I landed an 8 pointer (not as big as your 8 pointer) and a nice doe on Saturday morning, which were my first crossbow deer. Since this area is closed to gun hunting, there were quite few deer. Best of luck for the rest of your season.

Most people get does for their first xbow deer, you go and get a trophy. Congrats groundpounder, that's a very respectable buck.

Going out tomorrow morning, for a afternoon hunt, if I see one like that, he's down.

Nice buck groundpounder!! Are you getting any extra action due to gun hunters pushing the deer to you?

A buddy of mine has offered to let me use 12 acres he owns between Cartersville and Rome, GA. I scouted it out and wasn't real impressed . . .it's a long strip with a house on either side. Very little deer sign, thick brush. However, there is a hunting club with several beautiful acres which joins the backside of the property. I was thinking, now that it's cooler and the possibility of gun hunters pressuring the deer from the hunting club property. . .that 12 acre strip might have deer moving into it now. I took two scouting trips and didn't see a deer . . .however, I might have to check it out again.
